The major news of the day:
The Eagleton to "pull out" if reaction shows McG's chances become "untenable. 11
10-12 minutes w/leads on all nets relating to Eagleton. McG
is "1000%" behind him; Gary Hart says there is no more to
be learned. Eagleton feels he'll e merge "stronger and wiser"
(ABC lead); realizes it was a mistake not to inform McG
earlier (CBS led w/this segment on film on all). He will discuss
matter prior to decision of 24 hours before as he recognizes
questions will continue.
All nets w/reports from Custer on
how McG never knew of incidents but they make no difference.
All nets w/film of Scott and Mansfield leading way as Senate
colleagues rallied behind Eagleton w/warm, bipartisan praise.
MacGregor on 2 nets and Dole on the other telling of RN's
firm instructions that this issue not be discussed by gov't or
political associates of Pres
NBC's Brinkley concluded lots
of people need treatment which Eagleton owned up to
ABC's
Smith predicts story will be a "short-term wonder" McG,
not Eagleton, is who is important.
CBS closed w/Mrs. Eagleton,
the perfect image of the political wife, as she told how this was
the year of open politics and truth. Thus story should be revealed.
And, said Barbara, McG said -- hurrah, I've chosen the right
man.
Despite the positive public comments, said Mudd, the
Dems are still "sweating it out" and 2 nets noted Hill Dems
privately feel disclosure will hurt ticket.
NBC, emphasizing powers of incumbent in an election year, had
film of RN-Meir; RN-Cash and JDE on the "credit card Congress. 11
ABC also w/film of RN-Meir call. ABC/CBS briefly noted budget
message.
The 5 imprisoned British dock leaders were released on contempt
charges and general strike is averted.
SVN flag flies over part of Quang Tri Citadel but fighting continues.
NBC w/film of US pilots debunking and rebutting charges of
intentional dike bombing while on CBS, Kalb suggested State post-
poned its side of case again because it doesn't feel it is strong
enough to counter Hanoi's propaganda challenge.
