UPI, in a feature, notes that the last time a VP nominee was
threatened with being dropped in mid-campaign, he survived the
man was RN. It's noted that, after furor arose, RN told Ike he stood
ready to step down, but Ike said he hadn't decided. After RN's TV
speech, UPI says: "Mrs. Eisenhower was in tears, and her husband
was visibly affected. 11 Later Ike said: "Ive seen many brave men in
tough situations. I've never seen any come through in better fashion
than RN did. 11 The story notes RN was apprehensive after the speech,
but at next meeting with Ike, the General threw his arms around RN
and exclaimed: "You're my boy. "
Dem Mayor Dunn of Elizabeth, N.J., said he'd campaign for RN.
He's Chmn. of NJ Conf. of Mayors
In its lead note, Time says
RN's description of the election was "only moderately extravagant"
given RN's sometime use of hyperbole. But the '64 and 132 elections
were also clear-cut choices and until McG solidly stakes out his posi-
tions, the scope of difference this year won't be obvious.

UPI leads: "A Louis Harris poll reported that VP Agnew continues
to receive a negative rating in response to the question how good a job
he's doing as VP. 11 But it's noted later that approval was up 10% from
1971, and that the VP received strong approval for wanting to crackdown
on VN and student protesters, and also for being an appealing public
figure by saying things most politicians don't say.
A 2-pg. US News feature on the VP choice says RN's official word
on the ticket set the re-election campaign in motion, altho WH sources
say there was really no doubt the VP would be RN's choice. The VP
has his work cut out for the campaign, says US News, which quotes a
WH official as saying VP Agnew ''will be carrying the torch,
dealing
extensively with the record of McG's proposals. 11 The mag highlights
the Veep's record: a NSC member; troubleshooter for RN abroad and
domestically; "recent success" in reviving RN's revenue sharing plan;
strong positions in favor of traditional US values; and help in raising
dollars for the GOP. US News notes "repeated applause" the Veep has
won from RN, and says RP Agnew tends to have the inside track for '76.
But, says the mag, RN feels he should groom several '76 possible to
give the US a choice between able contenders. Wash. thinking puts
VP Agnew, Connally and Percy among post-RN contenders. Connally's
views and campaign role are also featured.
US News notes many
GOP conservatives would back Connally in '76 if he switches parties
and serves in a high RN Admin post 'til then.
