MEDIA POLITICAL ANALYSIS
September 15
In this morning's papers, hard non-political news dominates the
front pages. Chicago Trib, for example, has no political news on page
one. The "significant" progress on the trade agreement with the
Soviets, passage of SALT, up-coming grain deal with the Chinese, and
the revenue sharing compromise in conference in that order --
dominate the press play.
In straight political terms, the President himself did not have a
bad day not at all. His meeting with Rizzo was front-page in both Sun
and Philly, papers where any McGovern's coverage was mostly inside.
Also, the Harris poll is widely reported, widely covered. Further, ABC
had a positive report on how RN is doing in Texas.
What about McGovern? Last night he got more good television again
on his campaigning with Kennedy -- good crowd chats -- although CBS
led in with the Harris Poll to McGovern. Poll was down-played by Cronkite -
who said it camebefore McGovern trip, which Morton says is getting
good results.
Of note, from this morning's New York Times story and others,
where McGovern testily replied to Klien's charge he was using Kennedy
as a "crutch, 11 it seems clear that McGovern is becoming increasingly
impatient and frustrated at his failure to "smoke RN out. 11 which has been
the McGovern strategy. So, now, he is accusing the President of "hiding"
from the people, which hardly sounds like winning politics.
In wires and back pages, we continue to get favorable coverage by
virtue of the fact many news organizations are polling normally
Democratic precincts, and coming up with McGovern in trouble type
stories.
Two big clouds! Again, the Watergate was a major story with the
finding of still another bug in the DNC. Wide TV coverage also given to
Maurice Stans counter-suit against O'Brien for libel. Helpful note
was statement of expert that the latest bug found was a "Mickey mouse
device" which a "moron" could have discovered. Veep also in film dismissing
Watergate as politics.
Second big cloud: Butz was on the Hill yesterday denying any "deal;"
though this morning's Post and Times indicate word was passed to the
big boys a deal was coming; which fore-knowedge enabled them to profit
at expense of farmers. That and Watergate continue to plague us.
