THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN NEWS SUMMARY November 4, 1972 (Fri. nets, wires, columns) The major stories of the day: Politics led the way on all nets w/RN in Chicago leading ABC/CBS and following McG lead on NBC. Hecklers given film but RN continued unphased thru remarks and he was clearly heard and warmly received on ABC/NBC in promising peace w/honor and asking for chance to keep on building structure for peace. CBS used Chicago remarks on need for civility, and continued w/film of RN in Nixon Country as he gave high praise to Bartlett. McG said by ABC/NBC to have seen RN's Thurs. speech as his big break and his own speech is expected to decry the alleged perpetuating of a hoax by the Pres. in deceiving public on peace hopes. (In speech, McG charged RN has betrayed US hopes "cruel political deception" and won't end war.) Film of McG before clergy on all nets seeing no early peace and Shriver on ABC/NBC rapping US support of Thieu. He and his staff said by ABC to be pessimistic re: Tues but his ebullience continued NBC was only one to note there was "talk" of a "rude" statement by McG. VP on ABC/NBC film sharply hitting McG for the most meddling in foreign policy by any WH candidate in history. NBC noted irony in the VP's having to face the issue of whether it's proper to disrupt the VP in a campaign where he has tried to be non-controversial. In other political news, ABC w/favorable report on Common Cause and negative clip from 1701 as efforts to bar photographers were made as fund list was released. ABC/CBS outlined top RN contributors. NBC profiled bellwether Illinois which is about evenly divided GOP/Dem. Good signs for GOP are '68 Wallaee vote to RN and higher suburban registration. VN battles w/ceasefire supposedly imminent was on CBS while all nets noted reported US plans to keep civilians in VN after GIs come home Not and there was film on 2 nets of US rushing equipment to SVN. Kalb focused on US delay in signing v/Marvin saying some at State were embarrassed over RN failure to sign as apparently planned on Oct. 31 Cora Weiss says Mme Binh told her POWs won't be home by Xmas or for a "long, long time" unless RN signs by election. Sharp criticisms over delay from Hanoi and PRC also Smith w/positive commentary on outlook in Indochina when war ends the Marshall-type plan for Mekong will go into effect.
