OCR Page 1 of 43NEWS SUMMARY THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN
December 14, 1972
(Wed. nets, wires, columns)
The major stories of the day:
-
HAK's return to DC, apparently w/out a peace agreement, led
all nets as reports of general pessimism dominate Thieu demand
that GVN be assured sovereignty over all land held at war's start
seen as key obstacle. This would mean NVA in South would be
there illegally if they stayed. NBC/CBS noted this was expected
to be last session, but said Chancellor, it seems clear that peace
is not now at hand. Kalb said NVN suggests failure in reaching
accord. "Optimism of recent past has evaporated, 11 said Valeriani.
Jarriel said chances for any POWs by Xmas are rapidly slipping
away. HAK on film on all nets on plans for staying in touch w/Tho.
Possibility of more talks is seen by observers. US cautions
against undue pessimism, said Kalb, but does nothing to relieve
it.
Film on all nets as Margaret said "every little bit takes its toll"
and she concedes HST is weaker and her optimism has lessened.
Chance of recovery is "extremely tenuous, 11 said NBC of the
ex-Pres. whose condition has worsened w/failure to respond as
well as before and his semiconscious state. He has lost ground,
if anything, said CBS.
-
Live footage and film on all nets from Apollo 17 as Cernan and Schmitt
engage in what may be last moon walk of 20th C. Very positive
assessments of mission thus far, and said NBC, if things continue
to go as they are, trip will have been almost perfect. Scientists at
NASA and elsewhere remain elated over discovery of the orange
soil -- could be the last gaseous gasp of moon's volcanic formation.
ABC film of FDA's negative view toward diet pills; noted by other
nets as well and all noted FDA call for tightening up on use of
Vitamins A and D
All nets noted what CBS called good news
for tourists as an international air fare war will begin on Feb. 1
on trips to Europe and will last til at least summer.
Noted by all nets was Miller's slight lead over Boyle w/25% of
vote in. The challenger claims victory is likely due to much
reduced support for Boyle in his past strongholds.
