The major stories of the day:
-- All nets led w/reports on RN's State of the Union and its call
for lessening power of Washington ("historic crossroads" noted
by NBC/CBS) followed by clips of RN swearing in his "peace
Cabinet" - - minus Weinberger who was on ABC being "worked
over again by lib solons who think he was picked to wield the axe"
on social/welfare programs. Hughes, Williams, EMK all on
film vs. Cap
NBC/CBS noted RN has been nominated for
Nobel Peace Prize -- Chancellor adding that "dozens of others"
also named while UPI points out this is 1st time nominees have
been confirmed in advance.
- - In ceasefire-related news, receiving over 8 minutes on ABC, all
nets noted Thieu is ready to talk w/VC in Paris by Tuesday on a
political settlement. CBS said VC claim they've not yet been
officially approached. Nets further noted 1st meeting of Joint
Military Commission after week of wrangling and ABC/CBS
w/film of ICCS reps checking out quarters in Hue
NBC
film of continued fighting near Quang Tri w/both ABC/NBC
noting a US adviser's view that unless ICCS gets there soon,
they can forget about it as open warfare will have broken out.
ABC w/film of mass rally in Peking hailing Tho -- in
contrast to absence of fanfare in US for HAK and the agreement.
- - All nets briefly noted unemployment dropped to 5% -- lowest in
2-1/2 years.
-- Stennis is continuing to recover, noted ABC/NBC, but remains
"very serious" w/"guarded" prognosis and is now in "danger
period" re: potential infection.
-- ABC/CBS film reports and NBC note as Sirica strongly emphasized
he's not satisfied the whole story came out and he hopes Senate will
have power to get to bottom of it. ABC said the Judge came close
to accusing Sloan of perjury. Cronkite called Sirica remarks,
"extraordinary."
