Again the day's news was dominated by Attica - - 10 minutes or
more lead on all nets - - two Rockefeller news conferences did not
clear up confusion, in fact all reports emphasize that the situation
is growing more confusing and there is newly emerging suggestions
of a coverup. Other major stories:
- Sec'y. Connally in London flatly rejects dollar devaluation - -
not mentioned on ABC
- The Governors' Conference with footage of Muskie on NBC
and CBS; mention again of GOP success in blocking Dem move
to criticize the economic program
- The change of Admin policy on phosphates
- HKS noted that opening JFK Center evoked many memories of
the JFK years -- not all of them good.

INDOCHINA
All nets noted that Saigon's police chief said
McGovern was "unwittingly" meeting with VC
agents when the church meeting was firebombed
Tuesday. The police chief is a civilian and a
suitor of Thieu's 18-year-old daughter. He said
the firebombing was carried out by indignant
peoples' self defense forces who had been barred
from the church when they tried to break up the
meeting. Frank Mankiewicz called the poli ce
chief's statement hogwash and said he would make
a better stand up comedian than a police chief.
And McGovern protested to Thieu calling the
remark "an insult, a fraud and a farce" and
demanding an apology. Sen. Mansfield, asked
about the McGovern firebombing incident said:
"A Senator, like anyone else, takes his chances
when he goes some place. 11
