INTERNATIONAL ECONOMY
If, as SO many experts tell us, RN's emergency economy measures
were inevitable why were so many of us overseas taken so obviously by
surprise? To some the fall of the mighty is gratifying in Britain we
remember the humiliation of the Suez fiasco. And Britons have not
enjoyed the experience of being bailed out SO often by a more powerful
ally. But 3 things should be kept in mind: 1) What happens to the U.S.
economy will affect everyone in Britain. 2) Those who cheered the loudest
at the U.S. economic crisis are not only the enemies of the U. S., but
Britain's as well. 3) We should remember all the UK owes the U.S. over
the past quarter century frankly we relied absolutely on the US for our
defense. It is not too much to say we owe our peace, our preservation
and much of our prosperity to them. Think too of the almost unbelievable
scope of benefits conferred on the free world by the U. S. America is in a
mess but the U.S. is a nation rich enough and strong enough to handle it.
And once again "we had better hope they do, for they are still our shield
and our ultimate sheet anchor. 11 (M. P. Angus Maude in 9/17 C.S. Monitor)
MIDDLE EAST
The Administration seems to be begging for trouble on the Hill for not
selling fighters to Israel. Resentment over Admin footdragging is leading
to an inevitable clash the situation is extremely tense and explosive.
The baffling part is that the Admin is certain to lose in a head-on clash.
GOP leaders will be in the forefront of requiring the fighter sale. While
Rogers is stalling, bipartisan congressional hostility is seething and
Jackson is again preparing to offer mandatory legislation for the Phantom
sales that most GOP M. C. 's will feel inpelled to back and RN will have
to accept. (9/10 Robert Allen)
THE PRESIDENT
RN's call for Hill support for the new economic policy was more than a
call for bipartis anship -- it stressed the importance of united support in
pursuing national, not specific interests. RN's remarks were not an
apologia for materialism -- on the contrary staying #1 means more than
standard of living, it also determines how many resources are available
to the country to solve our problems. RN did an able job selling his
program -- if Congress acts quickly and favorably it will be responding as
the American public is responding. 11 (9/10 Detroit News edit)
