OCTOBER 22, TH97 PRESIDENT HAS SEEN The President's Supreme Court mominations sweep the head- lines this morning. Powell and Rehnquist get straight to favor- able coverage in all papers partly due to the lateness of the press hour, which did not geant much time for intrepetive pieces, and partly due to "surprise" nature of appointments. Early Hill reaction seems favorable Both Times and Post in their WH editions had editorials the Times coming very close to an endorsement of the two, saying Powell ably filled RN's criteria, while Rehnquist was a brilliant "Goldwater conservative." The Post liked RN's speech, although the aroma of sour grapes pervaded the editorial. The AG letter ruling the ABA out of consideration, as the h dy to pass on future Court appointments get wide play and attent- ion second story, relating to the Court. But the Supreme Court choices dominate the headlines, the news on television this morning.
