THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN
Major News of the Day:

CBS led with over 7 min. on VN. All nets noted air war in which a
US jet shot down 1st mig over NVN in 22 months. CBS reported on
electronic equipment used by US and enemy in hitting their targets
and followed with a report on nearly deserted Long Cheng. NBC
told of Chinese gunners helping the NVN and ABC tells of increasing
Russian aid to the enemy.
Economic news leads other nets as CLC exempts small businesses
(less than $100, 000 yearly) and landlords from Phase II. Some
labor leaders are already yelping; Dow Jones down 2. 26.
NBC in its budget investigation finds the "Safe Streets" money for
states is going to states faster than they can spend it -- yet RN
is asking for still more funds for the program.
Florida has put "no vacancy" sign on prisons because they are
over-crowded.
Judge Merhige refuses to stay his Richmond desegregation order.
House approved most comprehensive campaign spending reform
in half century but H. K. Smith wants it to go a few more steps and
let Govt pay the whole campaign tab.
All nets note RN's "get tough" expropriation order.
Sandy Koufax, Yogi Berra and Early Wynn and Ralph Kiner
(not noted on net) were elected to Hall of Fame; Koufax
youngest ever to make it.
INDOCHINA
"The air war seems to be escalating" led Cronkite
as he noted heaviest B52 raids since last April in
order to blunt the expected NVN offensive. And
the enemy is stepping up its air defenses as all
nets noted that a phantom downed a Mig over NVN
after 5 US planes dodged SAMS and anti-aircraft.
