(Tuesday nets and wires)
THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN
The major stories of the day:
-
All nets led with the expected move of the AG to return to his old
job - - running RN's campaign and the nomination of "philo-
sophical twin" Kleindienst to AG and Pat Gray to the No. 2 spot.
All nets with the Goldwater conservative praising the AG and
expressing his humility and pride in RN's confidence in him.
Libs, led by Bayh, expected to put up only pro forma fight
more for political purposes than really stopping the nomination.
Bayh on 2 nets re: wiretaps and press censorship pushed by
Kleindienst and Goldwater also on 2 hailing the choice which NBC
said was timed now partly to mollify the GOP right upset by PRC
trip.
-
Busing again a major story with note by all of the VP-Mansfield-
Scott opposition to constitutional amendment.
Film also on
all of Rep. Fletcher Thompson candidate for Senate praising
Richmond County, Georgia, residents for their peaceful boycott
and also hailing RN's promotion of equal enforcement of laws
North and South.
CBS film as AFL-CIO for first time, qualified
its endorsement of busing and HHH told us compulsory busing has
never worked while he criticized RN's too vague "spaghetti" ap-
proach. (Film on other nets as well as Muskie and Hartke also
wooed labor's $6M. Warmest welcome for HHH. Hoffa in lobby
ignored by Dems. and AFL-CIO but tourists gave him as much
attention as they did the Dems.)
-
NBC back again on Steinfeld -- Admin. confirms it's downgrading
his post. Up to the doctor if he wants to stay on in such a power -
less post.
-
Note by all nets that the ceasefire was barely over before US
planes were back in action over SVN. CBS film of POW shot
down in Dec. urging family to do all it can to bring peace.
-
Laird and his "lengthy justification" for $83. 5B budget only on one
net tho his concern of growing Soviet threat was noted by all.
-
Mao-friend Edgar Snow is dead.
Malraux says PRC may be
interested in 3-4 decade Marshall Plan.
