THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN
The Major Stories of the Day:
-
RN's upcoming speech led all nets with Cronkite saying "a feeling
of crisis about VN pervades Washington" with the NSC session and
raids close to Hanoi adding to the anxiety. But WH said nothing --
Rather pointing out that "every available source¹¹ had nothing to say.
Risks to summit noted.
-
Indochina continued to dominate network news, above and beyond
speculation over RN's speech, with reports from My Chanh, Hue
and Danang with emphasis on impending attack on Hue and the
undermanned ARVN force defending it and the plight of the refugees.
All nets noted US raids near Hanoi -- 1st since April 16.
And
3 more MIGs were downed.
Grim cover or lead stories in all
news weeklies on VN.
-
Dem primaries was other major story - - HHH on way up in
Nebraska but McGovern with organization; HHH likely winner
in W. Va; Wallace charging hard in Michigan.
-
NBC/CBS film reports on the decreasing hopes for finding anyone
alive in the Kellogg Silver mine. Rescue efforts have been frustrated
and there's increasing criticism of the lack of disaster training
given the miners.
INDOCHINA (Speech coverage, before and after, in separate report)
Following note of raids, NBC/CBS noted Hanoi's statement that
dikes were hit along with schools, villages, markets. (NVN also
Note
charged "heavily populated areas" were hit. ) 80% of NVN crops are
in this region, observed Cronkite, and 65% of pop. live there. Region
has been off limits in past, said Walter, and DOD says it is not on
list now.
