The major stories of the day:
Wholesale prices jumped a "very sharp" 1. 8% in Dec. w/whole-
sale food prices up 6.8% was ABC/CBS lead and #2 on NBC. Both
nets and wires emphasized it was biggest monthly increase for
WPI since '51 and the largest for food prices in 26 years. For '72,
WPI was up 6. 5% and wholesale food prices were up 18. 7%
Rather said it means housewives can expect more increases in
their already high food bills, while UPI said prices more than
doubled the inflationary rate hoped for by RN in '72

NBC film blamed the strong consumer demand for food as
principal factor in pushing beef prices up, adding about 12M
acres of land idle last year will be pulled back into production
(also noted by Pierpoint as playing major role in solving problem).
The "freeze is still on" at the HAK-Tho talks, reported CBS, and
was similarly noted by ABC. NBC's Dobyns, however, thought
the "mood seemed better. 11 He added Tho and Thuy are reportedly
ready to make some concessions, but not on the issue of whether
VN is one nation or two. NBC/CBS noted Pompidou hopes the
talks will succeed.
All nets w/film on confirmation hearings as Richardson declined to
answer Symington's questions on bombing because it would get onto
"negotiating track. 11 NBC's Cochran stated Richardson said he
believed in liberal policy of giving out military info which made
the comm. members "glad" but they soon found out 1 subject
the bombing -- was off-limits. Hughes on NBC/CBS films insisting
US people have a right to know about bombing

CBS films (noted by NBC) said bombing was effective in reducing
NVN's capabilities to maintain land battle in SVN. On CBS he
added pics showed Hanoi Hilton POW camp was not hit by bombs.
Lengthy reports on aftermath of New Orleans sniper killings was
NBC lead and prominent on other nets. Business was usual in
downtown area, while the funeral for one of the slain policemen
was held. Authorities and others still wonder if there was a 2nd
sniper. NBC/CBS film reports of slain sniper emphasized he was
from good family and hometown of Emporia, Kansas is "stunned. 11
Jury in Watergate trial has been selected was subject of CBS film
report and noted on ABC. Both also noted all but 2 jurors are black.
