OCR Page 1 of 63NEWS SUMMARY
January 23, 1973
(Monday nets, wires, mags)
The major stories of the day:
-- LBJ's heart attack death at 64 announced at 6:40 and nets
w/12-16 minute film hilites of his career and mixed (Sevareid)
to warm (Smith-Reasoner) commentaries. Focus on his unique
power on US scene, his record of domestic programs --
"greatest flow of compassionate legisl. 11 ever, said Cronkite,
his support for most far-reaching civil rights bill ever and his
eventual undoing by the VN war. (Report and reaction at end of summary.)
-- Starting prior to announcement on LBJ, NBC led w/Paris report
as Utley said "The cast has assembled for what looks like final
act" in VN war. CBS said "roads to peace converged on Paris. 11
All nets w/film from Majestic -- neutral ground -- and NBC said
site indicates ceremony possible this week w/French moving
champagne in. "And so, this may be it" -- the final week of
long war, said NBC. It then had 5 minutes, however, of film
of bloodiest fighting in SVN in 6 months and of 2 POWs (Martini
and Guill) interviewed by E. Germans. The men weren't pleased
w/hitting civilian sites or the 'ineffectual' raids generally and were
surprised by heavy SAM defenses. One didn't see how WH could
deny civilian sites were hit.
3rd major story of day was Supreme Court's 7-2 (White/Rehnquist)
decision forbidding state laws in regulating abortion in 1st 3 months.
It's up to woman and doctor. Affects 46 states. Decision did
limit abortion on demand by granting states the right to regulate in
last 3 months of pregnancy. Planned Parenthood's Guttmacher
on NBC/CBS called it a "great day" for freedom; an "extraordinary"
decision. Cardinal Cooke's rep on NBC (CBS note) called decision
"shocking, 11 "horrifying" and a "tragic utilitarian judgement. 11
CBS also noted Krol called decision an "unspeakable tragedy. 11
If experience under NY's liberalized law is any guide, there be
one abortion for every 2 births, said CBS.
ABC in only report on Watergate focused on Baldwin testimony which
was "not taken at face value" by Sirica (Smith). And Donaldson said
Sirica "appeared to doubt testimony" that Baldwin couldn't
remember name of man to whom he gave tapes. Donaldson reported
"tho working assumption has been envelope went to someone as yet
