NEWS SUMMARY January 23, 1973 (Monday nets, wires, mags) The major stories of the day: -- LBJ's heart attack death at 64 announced at 6:40 and nets w/12-16 minute film hilites of his career and mixed (Sevareid) to warm (Smith-Reasoner) commentaries. Focus on his unique power on US scene, his record of domestic programs -- "greatest flow of compassionate legisl. 11 ever, said Cronkite, his support for most far-reaching civil rights bill ever and his eventual undoing by the VN war. (Report and reaction at end of summary.) -- Starting prior to announcement on LBJ, NBC led w/Paris report as Utley said "The cast has assembled for what looks like final act" in VN war. CBS said "roads to peace converged on Paris. 11 All nets w/film from Majestic -- neutral ground -- and NBC said site indicates ceremony possible this week w/French moving champagne in. "And so, this may be it" -- the final week of long war, said NBC. It then had 5 minutes, however, of film of bloodiest fighting in SVN in 6 months and of 2 POWs (Martini and Guill) interviewed by E. Germans. The men weren't pleased w/hitting civilian sites or the 'ineffectual' raids generally and were surprised by heavy SAM defenses. One didn't see how WH could deny civilian sites were hit. 3rd major story of day was Supreme Court's 7-2 (White/Rehnquist) decision forbidding state laws in regulating abortion in 1st 3 months. It's up to woman and doctor. Affects 46 states. Decision did limit abortion on demand by granting states the right to regulate in last 3 months of pregnancy. Planned Parenthood's Guttmacher on NBC/CBS called it a "great day" for freedom; an "extraordinary" decision. Cardinal Cooke's rep on NBC (CBS note) called decision "shocking, 11 "horrifying" and a "tragic utilitarian judgement. 11 CBS also noted Krol called decision an "unspeakable tragedy. 11 If experience under NY's liberalized law is any guide, there be one abortion for every 2 births, said CBS. ABC in only report on Watergate focused on Baldwin testimony which was "not taken at face value" by Sirica (Smith). And Donaldson said Sirica "appeared to doubt testimony" that Baldwin couldn't remember name of man to whom he gave tapes. Donaldson reported "tho working assumption has been envelope went to someone as yet
