THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN
SPECIAL REPORT
NEWSPAPER COVERAGE OF RN'S SPEECH BEFORE
SOUTH CAROLINA LEGISLATURE
(Wednesday, February 21, 1973 papers)
RN's speech before SC Legislature did not seem to command as
much in-depth media coverage as did his AFL-CIO visit. Speech was
given p. 1 display in 10 of 20 newspapers reviewed, but it led none, was
#2 in 4 Charlotte Observer, St. Louis Globe-Democrat, Indianapolis
Star, and Boston Herald-American -- and #4 or #5 in other 6. Only 7
papers of the 20 included any pics, and only 3 on p. 1 (Sun, Richmond
Times-Dispatch and Observer). (Trib w/p. 1 pic of PN and Molly Pitcher
Award and p. 3 story/pic of RN).
Charlotte Observer, by far, gave the most coverage w/2 stories, a
4-col. color pic of RN receiving standing ovation from Legislature and a
2- col. pic of motorcade on p. 1, as well as 2 additional pics as reports
continued on p. 18.
Laotian ceasefire, Butz on food prices, Strauss at AFL-CIO meeting,
Hill protestors of budget cuts and local stories seemed to receive wider
reportage, w/14 of the 20 papers relying on AP/UPI for stories of SC visit.
Correspondents of remaining 6 papers did note enthusiastic, large crowds
and standing ovations (as well as few protestors), but most kept comments
on speech, if any, to a minimum. LA Times' Toth, for example, said
speech was "largely an amalgam of his earlier piecemeal comments to
reporters. But in 'the heartland of American patriotism, as Gov. West
called it, the address was very warmly received. 11
Chic Sun- Times'
...
Littlewood wrote most of speech was devoted to justification of VN policies,
while local Charlotte Observer staffer Bass said RN was "symbolically"
thanking all who supported him.
Other comments and leads included the following:
LA Times' Toth led #5 report: "RN predicted history will prove the
US was right to have 'stuck it out' in VN. 11
Similarly, Sun-Times'
Littlewood led p. 8 story: "RN visited the capitol of SC and said
Americans can be proud that 'we stuck it out' til an 'honorable' ceasefire
agreement was reached. 11
But, in #2 article, Charlotte Observer's
Bass led: "RN told S. Carolinians US must be a 'united country' to play
the role it must in seeking world peace. 11
