THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN WEEKEND NEWS REVIEW April 30, 1973 Watergate continues to dominate w/ ABC Sun. leading w/ Post's latest that Colson knew of the bugging plan, per testimony by Magruder. (Story also in Time which also says Chuck planted persons appearing as homos at McG rallies. ) And Times says HRH/JDE, subjected to very wide media and political criticism over weekend, will meet / federal prosecutors this week to discuss their roles, if any, in bugging and/or coverup. Wires and nets (4 of 5 shows led w/ Watergate this wkend) are anticipating a major RN statement soon / speculation increased w/ knowledge of Rose Woods CD presence. AP led: "His privacy protected by Marine sentries and a WH news blackout, RN extended his stay at the mountaintop retreat, amid indications he was preparing a statement on the swirling scandal. 11 (NY News says AG is also at CD. Rather noted Chotiner, who helped w/ "Checkers" speech in evidence at WH.) CBS said in lead Sat if it were not for Timahoe, RN would have been alone at CD. Nets noted sudden cancellation of economy meeting Preceding 60 Minutes' regular features Sun., the summary of the day's stories was com- pletely related to Watergate. The pressure is building for an independent prosecutor, led NBC. ABA Pres. Meserve on NBC/CBS calling for such a move along lines of Coolidge following Teapot Dome. Percy on CBS/ABC film and NBC note that he'll introduce resolution for Warren-type commission Monday. He said the most shocking revelations may be yet to come. And, said ABC's Gill, he strongly implied on what the reporter called the "day of critics, 11 that such as HRH/JDE should be fired. Gill said close RN aides expect "dramatic" RN moves to deal w/ an "intolerable crisis of confidence in gov't. 11 And AP leads: "RN is being strongly urged by WH aides just below top level to sweep out all those involved in the scandal. 11 UPI says WH is "paralyzed" and much of staff "demoralized. 11 Others calling for special prosecutor besides Percy, Meserve and some papers include; Ripon Society, Dem govs and Shriver. Dems may make their plea in nat'l TV, said Strauss, "to let public know they're going to see the bottom line of the affair. 11 He also said DNC will continue its civil suits Time says career attys. at Justice have also urged Petersen to step out.
