THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN NEWS SUMMARY May 25, 1973 (Thurs. nets, wires, columns) The major stories of the day: In an "exercise of mutual admiration" (ABC), "RN brought 450 cheering POWs to their feet w/a ringing proclamation" (CBS) of need to protect national security secrets. In lead stories on all nets w/excellent film clips, RN shown receiving standing ovations as he declared "it's time to stop making national heroes of those who steal secrets and publish them in the papers. 11 Also, on film on all nets was RN as he said secrecy made possible the USSR and PRC accomplishments, the VN C-F and the release of the POWs. POWs "applauded wildly!' said ABC in standing ovation which Rather said "lasted more than 1/2 minute. 11 Valeriani called it a "tonic for a Pres. beset by troubles" and ABC's Landay said a Pres "awash in a sea of troubles faced a sea of uniforms" -- kind of audience he likes best and which clearly likes him because the POWs feel RN got them back Chancellor said RN's in trouble w/admission of secret WH group that, w/out his knowledge, broke into Ellsberg's psychiatrist. Valeriani said RN's always believed the best defense is a good offense and national security is his principal weapon as he takes offensive against attacks on WH in wake of the Watergate scandals Similarly Rather said, after noting POWs will sing "God Bless America, 11 that thru all the celebration, RN's basic strategy for defending himself against charges he's done wrong is the basic line: Whatever covering up RN may have done, he did so for his country. - Convicted Watergater Bernard Barker, formerly in CIA and an anti-Castro Cuban-American, tells Senate he saw both Ellsberg psychiatrist breakin and that at DNC as needed by nat'l security. Film on all nets in #2 story w/Schorr saying Barker's "blind obedience" to Hunt and his motives "revealed the mentality of the conspirators. 11 Baldwin said he figured job of monitoring taps was legal given his employment by the Pres. re-election comm which was headed by then-AG and peopled w/many erstwhile WH staffers who were on way back to WH after Nov. and implying to him that he'd also get a job.
