The major stories:
-- VP on film on all nets (ABC lead) urging Senate hearings be
postponed lest their publicity result in eventual freedom for
the guilty while many innocents are smeared by the testimony
picked up by the "indefatigable TV camera. 11 Mudd said Admin
seems to be rallying to the side of Cox while NBC's man also
said VP became latest of Admin figures to question value of
hearings w/both nets noting Morton's Sun. criticism. But,
said NBC's Delaney, VP didn't call for ban on sessions; he
just warned public not to believe all it sees. CBS also noted
Veep said it's unlikely hearings will be suspended
Ervin
on ABC/NBC film regretting VP's stance but saying the hearings
will go on. Baker on NBC film w/similar comment
(Sessions
resume 10 am Tues w/Porter, then Stans. Magruder might be
heard Thurs. )
CBS lead w/note by others that Kalmbach solicited $75,000 in
cash from Stans on June 29, 172 for urgent WH project, 11
unrelated to campaign, which Kalmbach said "had approval of
high authorities. 11 Twas used to pay off defendants, said Schorr
and reportedly JDE told Kalmbach to round up the funds.
ABC/NBC film w/CBS note as prosecutors said evidence establishes
Dean was "at center of very profound kind of corruption" which
involved "exploitation of position of trust in order to foster
pervasive scheme to obstruct justice. 11 They added Dean's
"connivance and collaboration''w/others
"blocked and frustrated"
Watergate investigations, and said others should share the blame
tho they didn't name them. Sirica will rule Tues. on Dean
request to delay his grand jury testimony. Sirica also to rule
Tues on Cox request to ban TV from key Senate sessions
CBS
closed w/several minutes on the Watergate bumper stickers,
games, etc.
