THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN NEWS SUMMARY July 13, 1973 (Thursday nets, wires) The major stories of day -- RN entered Bethesda Hospital for treatment of viral pneumonia. Tkach said there were "no complications¹¹ and he should be out of the hospital w/in a week. He noted RN's good health in the past and predicted recovery "should be rapid." -- RN agreed to meet w/Ervin privately, possibly next week, after receiving letter and phone call from Ervin as comm attempted to, as Reasoner put it, end the dispute over WH documents on Water- gate. Mudd, similarly, said comm was trying to prevent a show- down. Led all nets, w/Chancellor saying it appears RN "gave in a bit. 11 Jarriel said WH's trying to dispel idea "RN blinked first" in confrontation, and Mudd flatly stated it's not a compromise, w/both nets noting WH said RN talked w/Ervin out of "courtesy." ABC/CBS w/film of what NBC's Stern described as Ervin's announcement of "temporary cooling off pact, 11 w/Ervin saying RN assured him they' 11 meet once RN takes care of pressing matters w/deadlines. ABC also w/film, NBC/CBS noted, of Ervin reading letter to RN requesting meeting in an effort to stave off "the very grave possibility of a fundamental constitutional confrontation" between WH-Hill over the documents, which the comm resolved it had a right of access to. Concluding his testimony, JNM told of HRH/JDE's concern to keep the lid on Watergate (noted ABC/NBC) and, in Schorr's words, found his "credibility on trial" under questions from Dash. Film on all nets as Dash inquired how JNM expected comm to believe his testimony when it appeared he'd lied under oath previously. JNM disagreed w/Dash's interpretation and suggested comm draw its conclusion from his account and that of witnesses to follow Chancellor said JNM's testimony raised many questions, and he wonders if the "1st of the big pro-RN witnesses" really helped RN. - - Comm then turned to witness ABC noted Dean said knew a great deal about the cover-up -- Dick Moore who disputed Dean's belief RN knew of cover-up before March 21.
