The Major stories of the day:
15 bodies already found and there may be 15-20 more in grisly
mass murder in Houston. Led NBC/CBS w/film also on ABC
as cops seek to unravel what one called "work of a madman
a real sadistic perverted clown. 11 A 17 year old (Hendley)
claims he killed person (Crwell) w/whom he was in collaboration
w/the sex-related murders
CBS film from N Mexico as search
goes on for 5-year old using ham radio, apparently trapped in
truck wreckage.
NBC film on the still missing Getty grandson
for whom the rich man won't pay ransom lest it set precedent --
he has 14 grandchildren. Both the N Mex and Getty cases may
be hoaxes, but authorities are carrying out extensive searches anyway.
Comm went to Sirica asking for tapes. ABC lead and CBS film
also
of Comm deputy counsel Hamilton taking papers to EOB. Only
brief NBC note. ABC saw Comm asking Sirica to tell RN his
powers aren't as separate as he thinks. Schorr said decision
could be on narrow ground of whether RN waived his rights thru
summaries of Dean talks and tapes to HRH or the more general one
of whether he has any such right at all.
VP declined to turn over records voluntarily as Beall asked, noted
all nets. But deadline for response was extended because, Chancellor
added, he's the VP. Lawyers are studying immunity question.
Grand jury's investigation reviewed on NBC/ABC film. CBS
w/Mandel clip coming to defense of GOP predecessor and blasting
as "total failure" the admin of justice which allowed such leaks.
The Md. Gov. called on Richardson to look into situation because
no matter what happens, VP has been hurt
Very positive comment
in Thurs press on VP's press conference. "Damned lies" was
bannered in 7 of 10 reviewed. Only in Monitor was phrase neither
in head or lead graf. Not used at all, in fact.
Clements/Moorer on film on all nets indicating secret raids into
Cambodia/Laos went back to '66. And on all shows Laird memo
of 11/69 was featured w/Hughes calling it first such solid evidence
of orders for misrepresenting targets. Similarly, on all shows,
an articulate Clements said it was a first class, well-organized
