The major stories of the day:

RN to make response on W'gate at 9pm. Noted by all nets
w/ABC Lead. "Long-awaited, 11 HKS called it w/all nets noting
it was 1st/RN response since 5/22 and CBS saying it was 3rd
altogether. NBC w/Quayle poll that RN now w/32-68 job rating
compared to 55-45 last Oct. By 63-37, public says RN must
bear blamefor W'gate and by 70-30, public feels Comm. is more
in right in seeking tapes. But by 70-30 public feels RN should
remain in office and by 75-25, impeachment is opposed. But
in result later reported on NBC special, McG given 51-49 edge
if election held now.
Magruder to plead guilty Thurs. on 1
count of conspiracy, noted by ABC/CBS.
Somewhat sarcastic
CBS report on problems little contributors are having getting
donations back from CREP if they so request. $950, 000 has been
returned, but mainly to Vesco and corps which gave illegally.
Once more in obvious contrast to RN, said ABC's Gill in #2
story, the VP abandoned any claim of exec. priv. re: his financial
records and said they'd be made available and that he'd meet
w/prosecutors. ABC quoted a Cox source that this was kind of
accommodation they'd sought in private w/RN but that was rejected.
NBC noted cooperation would not extend to papers while VP as
that'd raise constitutional questions.
Rathernoted WH "flatly
denied" stories that RN had contingency list to replace VP or that
resignation had even been discussed. Also denied was that RN
had sought to prevent VP from giving up any records or that RN
was angry in their meeting.

The longest and mo st frustrating US war comes to end at midnite
after having begun in secret 12 years ago, led CBS. NBC also Led
w/story which was #4 on ABC. Kalb negatively reviewed for 6
minutes a policy which "flopped, 11 a view he said not even Admin
loyalists would dispute.

Brady w/bombing the last vestige of an ineffective and now
meaningless US commitment.
