NEWS SUMMARY
Aug. 30, 1973
(Wed. nets, wires. Columns separate)
The major stories of the day:
Sirica ordered RN to produce tapes and documents for the
judge to examine privately to enable him to decide if they
should be seen by grand jury. Led all nets. ABC/CBS
reports from WWH that RN won't comply as ruling is incon-
sistent w/sep. of powers. NBC noted, as did others, possible
WH appeal w/Sirica granting 5 days -- apparently til next
Thurs. "Historic" nature of ruling emphasized by all as was
way Sirica rejected most WH contentions and gave Cox "much
of what he wanted" (CBS), a "big legal victory" (NBC).
Graham of CBS said criticism of decision by RN will come
only at his political peril as Sirica ruling seems to have safe-
guarded those confidences which RN said he's protecting.
Ervin on film on all nets calling it "a great victory" as court
ruled Pres. doesn't have "absolute power" to w/hold truth.
On NBC/CBS, Sam also said it'd be terrible if Pres. were
only 1 of 200M Americans able to hide truth at his own discre-
tion. And Chancellor, apparently quite taken w/Ervin's "biblical
cadences, " noted the Sen. also said "as long as I've mind to
think, tongue to speak and heart to love my country, I'll deny
Constn confers on any Pres. arbitrary power to turn Geo.
Washington's US into Caesar's Rome."
Lankler on NBC film w/ABC/CBS note as he regretted very
much the falsification of "Salute to Agnew" finance records
and called it 1 of dumbest things any group could've done. He
pleaded innocent but may later change plea to avoid trial.
$4,000 fine for dinner comm. would be the penalty.
Nessen
of NBC looked at an apparent way of life in Md. for decades --
the close business/politico relationship w/campaign contributors
rewarded w/contracts. Dem leader of State Senate on film
called campaign dinners "shake-downs"
NBC noted Times
story that long-time VP friend, Hammerman, is reportedly
negotiating for immunity.
Susan Agnew's sudden return from
assignment on hospital ship Hope :noted by all nets w/kidnap
threats given as reason tho NBC noted Embassy wasn't aware of
any such threats.
