UPI Leads: "In a surprise move aimed at laying tapes controversy
permanently to rest, RN ordered Cox to halt all legal proceedings
against him. Cox hinted he'd defy RN orders even if it meant his own
dismissal.

Cox live on TV at 1 pm.
AP Leads: "RN has reluctantly yielded ground in his historic
battle to w/hold tapes but not enough to avoid head-on collision w/Cox. 11
Sirica remained silent. AP says he had not been consulted by RN
before statement was issued.
"RN, Wgate Panel Reach Tapes Compromise" was bulletineed at
bottom of Inquirer's State Edition
"RN to Give Hill, Court Summary
of Tapes" tops p. 1 of Post.
"RN Bars Tapes to Cox but Picks Stennis
to Listen" is #2 in Times w/subheads: "Reluctantly Agrees to Have
Summary Prepared, to be Verified by a Senator/Rejects Court Ruling/
Pres. Says Prosecutor Opposed His Compromise, but Ervin Acquiesced"
Banner in Sun: "RN Refuses Tapes to Cox, Offers 'Verified'
Summary to Senate, Sirica" w/subhead: "Prosecutor Threatened with
Dismissal."
Post says at time of WH meeting, Baker didn't know Cox had
rejected the compromise. Lardner also says other Hill support was
generally voiced w/out knowledge of vigorous objection by Cox.
Broder notes Stennis said upon return to Senate that "Divine inter-
vention¹¹ had spared him for "perhaps greatest challenge I've ever
faced. 11
W/support of Stennis from both sides, Broder says "political
shrewdness of RN choice" was underlined. And Post-man calls him
"a natural''choice for RN. Broder, as do other accounts, recalls 4/27
RN/Stennis trip to Miss just prior to HRH/JDE resignations when the
Sen. talked of "toughing it out. 11
"RN couldn't have chosen a
friendlier Dem to carry out the sensitive task, 11 begins a Knight profile
on man far more supportive of RN than many GOP solons -- and one who
defected from Dems more than any other Dem senator. Knight finds an
"extraordinary bond forged between RN/Stennis. 11
