NEWS SUMMARY
November 10, 1973
(Friday nets, wires. Comment separate)
The major stories of the day one of the brighter ones on nets in
a good while save for the 24 point D-J drop, largest in 11 years:
Egypt has "hailed" (NBC) the accord while Israel approved in
principle but wants clarifications re: absence of official word
on lifting of Red Sea blockade, checks on supplies going to
Egypt's 3rd army and the proposed return to Oct. 22 C-F
lines. CBS/ABC lead. Cronkite said Israeli concerns indicate
a "hitch" in the plan. Kalb said HAK thought he'd lined up his
ducks in a row when he left Saudi Arabia.
NBC film of
Israeli/Egyptian soldiers at C-F line apparently happy at
prospects for peace and CBS film as UN observers came into
Israeli-occupied land for 1st time an indication of a
"less fragile" C-F.
ABC film showed Israeli POWs who
received good treatment and were good spirited. One on film
was "greatly pleased" HAK came to Cairo. ABC noted undoubtedly
Egyptian POWs feel same way.
NBC also w/Cairo report on
increased confidence over future and unanimous satisfaction
w/new relations w/US, a country 2 weeks ago viewed as Public
Enemy #1.
ABC/CBS film of HAK in Saudi Arabia where
Faisal refused to budge and said there'd be no relaxation of oil
curbs til Israel is out of occupied lands.
In what all nets noted was called by John Anderson "frank, free
wheeling discussion, 11 RN met for 2 hours w/Hill GOP leaders
and outlined what NBC lead called "a strong and new defense" of
his stance re: tapes and scandals. ABC said it was RN effort to
dispel impression that he has largely ignored GOP MCs re:
their W'gate concerns. Anderson on all nets expressing his
increased confidence and Tower on ABC/CBS speaking favorably
of the candor and the outlook for the future. RN is believed ready
to release info to repair the breach of confidence, said Anderson
on ABC w/NBC note. ABC/CBS noted resignation/impeachment
didn't come up. NBC's Brokaw emphasized RN contention that he
can refute Dean's coverup charges w/"explicit and categorical"
evidence. And, said Brokaw, the MCs noted a change in RN
attitude from "I am the Pres¹ to "I need your advice; what can
I do. 11 RN recognizes his credibility problem, said Brokaw and
he's trying to do something about it.
NBC/CBS noted WH
promised "very constructive and positive steps" to clear up tapes
confusion. Cronkite added that it wasn't said what those steps
would be. Similarly, Jarriel said there'd been only talk so far,
no specifics.
