OCR Page 1 of 37THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN
NEWS SUMMARY
November 16, 1973
(Thurs. nets, wires. Comment separate)
The major stories of the day:
-- RN defended himself vigorously in and out of the WH, led Chancellor.
Another W'gate offensive was launched, began CBS
#4 story
on ABC was RN before Realtors
Similar excellent film on all
nets w/music, longstanding ovations, an obviously determined and
pleased President as he saidmistakes were made in '72; by over-
zealous men; acts that I'd never have tolerated
but will take
responsibility for. But mistakes are one thing: this Pres. has
not violated his trust (applause) and I say to you, finally, I was
elected to do job and no matter what
I'm not going to walk away
from it 'til I've completed it. CBS w/lengthier clip as RN told
of his goals
ABC/NBC both said RN had said nothing new
on W'gate
NBC/CBS noted RN to editors Sat nite (would seem
to be selected forum for q and a, noted Mudd saying live coverage
has been invited) and CBS proceeded to note Realtors was 1st in
series before friendly crowds w/Memphis, Macon and Orlando
next
NBC/CBS both noted AF1 to fly more slowly and Chancellor
said travel will be kept to minimum, but Pierpoint noted
w/shuttles to and fro, wkend trip will use 30, 000 gallons and
that doesn't include plane which will transport the limo.
Maraziti (R-NJ) on CBS film very positive on breakfast while
negative view of McCloskey also on film while Scherle's unhelpful
appraisal was noted. Pierpoint did say some of MCs were clearly
cheered and impressed
#2 on NBC was Duke review story that
2 GOP Sens. say RN suggested Richardson lied on Hill in denying
approval of ristrictions on Cox The ex-AG on film said he
never went along w/any restriction on Cox role and he hears
w/"amazement" reports that WH is seeking to blame him for
Sat. nite massacre. Duke called this "serious new conflict"
re: Cox departure and noted Mathias view that Judiciary should
reopen hearings and possibly call Haig to get WH view on that
week's developments. NBC noted as did ABC that WH says RN
remarks re: Richardson/Cox were misunderstood and he never
called him a liar. In brief note, HKS asked viewers to bear w/him
as story was complicated.
