THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN WEEKEND NEWS REVIEW January 21, 1974 Weekend news was dominated by RN energy message, M-E, and W'gate and impeachment. -- "RN went to the people w/a warning and a promise on e-crisis, 11 led Sat. ABC; warning the crisis is real and will mean sacrifices, but promising no one would be victimized. (Also CBS lead. No NBC due to golf. ) Clips on both nets of what CBS' Benton noted "WH chose for filming. 11 ABC's Landay said RN "was intent on demonstrating he remains on top of e-crisis despite crippling intrusions of W'gate" and on convincing skeptics crisis was real. Both nets noted RN prescription calls for continued self-discipline and Hill passage of Admin bills to levy taxes windfall profits and make mandatory the reporting of oil reserves by industry. Landay noted that if industry doesn't comply he'll personally call industry leaders on the carpet. - - RN's message led Times, Star and Trib and was p. 1 in other 4 papers viewed "RN Pledges Oil Price Fight" banners Sun. Syria's Assad reportedly softened position on Israeli POW's w/ Kalb reporting HAK briefed Israeli leaders on some surprising Syrian Suggestions" re: troop disengagement that may satisfy Israeli demand re: list of POW's pre-negotiations NBC noted Iraqi news agency report OPEC will shortly lift embargo and resume normal production.
