THE PRESIDENT HAS SEEN NEWS SUMMARY February 6, 1974 (Tues. nets, wires) The major stories of the day: - RN's freeze on diesel fuel prices led all nets w/Simon on NBC/ CBS film (ABC note) saying freeze will last til end of Feb. or til Hill passage of joint resolution allowing pass-thru of costs for truckers retroactive to May 15. ABC led saying talks had gone thru day as US faced "spreading paralysis. 11 The FEO boss also announced truckers will get 100% of their fuel needs in another of series of measures aimed at getting the truckers back on the road in what ABC called "a move to mollify angry truckers. 11 But ABC/NBC noted truckers were studying proposals and weren't initially satisfied w/measures which Chancellor called a com- promise on their request for price rollback. NBC's Graham said neither the freeze nor the other measures undertaken by FEO satisfied that request. RN action came after 3 days of negotiations, nets noted, that have seen truckers' strike spread to 42 states w/violence occurring in 14. Saxbe on CBS film (NBC noted) said he was ordering FBI and US attys across US to pursue fed violations by strikers so that necessary actions can be brought against violators no matter how long it takes ABC film reports on Midwest caravan of truckers protected by police Nets w/film reports on layoffs caused by strike on Ohio steel mill and auto plant (ABC), Ga. poultry farm (NBC) and Iowa meat company (NBC). NBC also w/film on the serious effects on small towns dependent on trucks for deliveries Cronkite noted US is almost being forced to rationing by the way gas station lines are getting out of hand. Nets noted (NBC/CBS w/film) Mass. voluntary rationing plan that'. copy McCall's, a plan Simon on NBC film lauded as "ingenious" in resolving energy problem thru local initiative. - RN will visit USSR in late spring or early summer, all nets noted, w/HAK preparing the way in March trip to Moscow. Following HAK-Gromyko meeting it was also announced SALT II will open Feb. 19 Schlesinger on NBC film (ABC noted) defended DOD
