NEWS SUMMARY
March 7, 1974
(Wed. nets, wires. News Conf.
Report at end of Summary)
The major stories of the day:
-- RN holds 2nd news conf. in 9 days. Led ABC and noted in
lead W'gate stories by NBC/CBS w/Rather seeing session as
reflecting RN's determination to be seen and heard answering
questions before many forums, including Houston and Chicago,
and to make clear he doesn't feel cornered and that he's
confident of remaining Pres til end of term. Short post-
conference commentaries focused on 3/21 tape and Judiciary's
likely desire for more evidence.
Dramatic turn by RN led NBC w/all nets having 6-7 minutes on
RN's readiness to give Judiciary the same materials given
Jaworski and to answer written question as well as to meet
later w/ranking Committee members. As result of this
"surprise" decision to send material to Judiciary, no WH
objection was raised to Sirica's sending secret G-Jage) G-J
report to Judiciary. But, said ABC, Wilson reportedly plans
lengthy, stubborn battle to prevent that from happening.
CBS also noted. .WH opposed Sirica's suggestion that impchmnt
proceedings be held off til trials start Sept. 9. Judiciary and
Spec. Pros. agreement on that w/WH found the 3 groups in
"unaccustomed agreement", said ABC.
-- But Judiciary isn't necessarily satisfied that RN's cooperation
goes far enough. NBC's Stern said St. Clair made clear there'd
be limits on providing material. Stern said St. Clair seemed to
indicate RN willingness to answer questions was tradeoff in
place of giving Judiciary more info than Jaworski got. But,
said Stern, if that's the deal, House is unlikely to buy. It
wants evidence of 1-2 years ago -- not RN's current recol-
lections of that period.
Waldie, Brooks and Holtzman
were on 1-3 nets indicating they're leaning to subpoena. But
McClory, Railsback and Hutchinson, also on 1-3 shows, were
encouraged by WH stance.
