NEWS SUMMARY
April 12, 1974
(Thurs. nets, wires)
The Major Stories of the Day:
-
"RN went into the record books w/another historical 1st," led
Mudd as ABC also said he became 1st Pres subpoenaed by House.
Story led all nets w/5-7 minute reports reflecting Comm. rejec-
tion of last-minute St. Clair compromise in favor of subpoena
approved by "overwhelming" (NBC) 33-3 vote. RZ on ABC/CBS
said WH would turn over tapes and material w/in next 2 weeks
and respond to subpoena by April 25 deadline. On NBC/CBS he
said it's not a question of numbers of tapes turned over or
gamesmanship but rather of facts. On ABC he asserted w/ or
w/out subpoena Comm. would have been given material requested.
But ABC/NBC noted RZ didn't say all requested material would be
turned over
NBC's Stern w/analysis of the "key to understand-
ing what's going on" -- that WH seemed ready to hand over tapes
of pre-March 21 conversations but none of the 38 that occurred
thereafter, the ones most likely to reveal any RN involvement in
coverup.
-
Chancellor commentary thought GOP support of subpoena was a
"quite important" event as "loyalty to Hill became more important
than allegiance to Pres. No one was sure how they'd vote if it
came to showdown w/Pres. Now we know they can't be counted
on to support Pres. If they'd divided w/Dems in party-line vote,
WH could have claimed whole impchmnt inquiry was a Dem witch
hunt. But since only 3 GOPs voted against subpoena, Chancellor
concluded, "it's still a bipartisan enterprise."
-
#2 story on all nets was worst terrorist attack inside Israel since
Lod airport massacre -- 18 dead including 13 women and children,
16 wounded in Kiryat Shemona after raid by Lebanese guerrillas
who later killed themselves. As NBC noted, tragedy eclipsed Meir's
resignation and the fall of her gov't. In her resignation speech to
Knesset, all nets noted she spoke of public ferment that couldn't
be ignored and her desire that the people express themselves in
new elections. ABC/NBC noted elections are months away w/NBC
noting it'll also be months before Israelis return to Geneva talks --
