The major stories of the day:
Judiciary subpoenaed 11 more tapes and RN diaries covering
4 periods in '72-'73. The overwhelming 37-1 (Hutchinson)
vote re: tapes made it "abundantly clear" (NBC), as all nets
noted, that Comm. rejects WH argument that it has all the
evidence it needs. Lott (R-Miss.) on all nets explained his
switch from April vote by saying material is needed as basic
evidence to prove RN's innocence or guilt and so Comm. can
put the matter to rest. Reasoner called WH reaction "predictable"
and Chancellor found "no sign of conciliation" in WH reiteration
that Comm. has necessary evidence. Morton on CBS noted that
in 4 separate votes there were never more than 9 votes against.
ABC noted RN's also "soft-pedaling" his defense to friendly
MCs who may 1 day sit in judgment on him. Following silent
film of Sequoia and session that Jarriel called "cordial dinner
and cocktail arm-twisting, 11 Ichord on film noted RN told MCs
he not resign and is innocent of W'gate complicity because
"I'm not that stupid" (CBS noted). Jarriel noted RN's also quick
to accentuate his role as internat'l leader as on film RN
addressed group of Mexican congressmen at WH. Jarriel noted
to further enhance RN's image as internat'l leader, plans for
June summit go forward.
Post-subpoena session including hearing of 2 tapes including 9/15
RN-HRH-Dean conversa tion which NBCnoted 1 MC called "highly
damaging to RN" because RN-HRH could be heard in their own
voices attempting to coverup W'gate and block Hill probe of
laundered money. Waldie on ABC (NBC noted) said hearing tapes
enhances the image of shabbiness on part of WH. He added on
ABC as Rodino also noted on ABC/NBC that t'scripts appear
incomplete tho Rodino's not sure if omissions were deliberate
or otherwise. CBS noted that while Waldie said tape revealed
"new and shocking" information, Marziti disagreed, saying
information was just as in WH 'scripts.
