My dear Senator:
As a life time Democrat please permit me to add
my voice to the chorus of enthusiastic applause that
has greeted your appointment as the new Chief of Staff.
You have long enjoyed the respect of both sides of the
aisle as a gentleman of the highest - and indeed, unmatched
honor, integrity and credibility.
It was great good fortune to know your most dis-
tinguished father-ln-law from the fall of 1947 when he
was serving his last term in the House and I was an
Assistant to Attorney Generl Tom Clark at the Department
of Justice. In later years on many occasions I enjoyed
the pleasure of many visits with the Senator and our dear
friend Ben Regan who came to New York by way of Chicago.
That the Almighty may shower you with His Choicest
Blessings to meet the challenges of the days ahead is
my fervent prayer.
