Dear Mr. Baker,
May I congratulete you on your appointment as Chief of Staff. We are in much need of
someone with administrative and political skills sufficient to meet the challenge of cleaning
house and (perhaps) making decisions that more accute Presidents would have already been
making. Having watched your political career since the Watergate days, I am of two minds. I
would very much have liked to have crossed the fixed gulf between our parties and voted for you
in 1988.
On the other hand, no conscientious American, no matter what his party affiliation, would
want the present administration to falter further. We need someone like you to put ambition
aside for a time and work for the betterment of government.
As to your political aspirations, I have read columns with diverse opinions. At one
extreme is the belief that you do not have "the fire in the belly" to want to do what is necessary
to win election. At the other lies the suspicion that you know 8 Republican victory to be
impossible in 1988 and that you are making a calculating move to position yourself for 1992.
Frankly, I hope that the truth is somewhere in the middle. There is nothing wrong with
being reluctant to seek great office. Martin of Tours, one of the Church's greatest bishops,
refused the mitre several times. He then only agreed to be consecrated if he would not be
required to take on the rich life that his esceticism rebelled against. His diocesan headquarters
was 8 cave!
On the other hand, if you are willing to accept the great burden of being the President,
then do everything that is moral to obtain the position. As you know far better than I, less
scrupulous men will do a great deal to obtain power. If politicians with ethical values cannot
find the energy to fight for great office, the office itself will be diminished.
I think that the President made an important move with your appointment. I pray that it
does not become apparent that he knowingly broke the law. If he has, then he will have to resign.
But if he simply did a poor job in administration, than the corner has been turned. Even though
I watch politics from my arm chair, I watch them very carefully. Your integrity and
willingness to deal with Congress should mean good things for the country in the remaining
months of the Reagan years.

would like to thank you for placing your own presidental
ambitions on hold to serve President Reagan, the Republican
party, and the American people.
As a 24 year old republican, I have been a strong supporter
of President Reagan since 1980. I have to admit that I was
disappointed with the Iran arms deal, but everyone makes
mistakes. I hope that all of us can put this issue in the
past and get on with the future.
If the President can raise another issue that is good for
all Americans, like tax reform was, then maybe we can put
this behind us. I think welfare reform could be the issue
to get the presidency back on track. I hope you will urge
the President to push this issue with the same vigor that he
