I've been a long time admirer of yours. I have been waiting
for your announcement to run for President of The United
States. At that time I was going to offer you whatever
assistance I could to get you elected. Now that you are the
Chief of Staff, It doesn't look like that will happen.
However, this weekend I read an article in our local
newspaper that said you may be the Party's choice if the
Party can't agree and come up with enough ballets to get one
of the candidates nominated. I'll keep my fingers crossed
that this will happen.
I think I know how important your current job is. I believe
that you have your hands full trying to hold the current
administration together. I have no doubts that you can
handle this position. I believe that you deserve more.
I hope this country hasn't lost the opportunity to have you
as President.

It was with pleasure that Jean and I read of your appointment
as Chief-of-Staff of The White House, which has received very
good coverage in Brazil. We think prayerfully of you in this
position of such importance and are sure you will fulfill the
responsibilities in an excellent way.
After forty years with the Presbyterian Mission in Brazil, we
retired but continue in the same work. We have no idea when
we'll stop and have no desire to do SO. Eventually our per-
manent retirement home will be Campinas, Sac Paulo, Brazil,
where we purchased a house, and where we will be near three
of our children and five grandchildren. We do expect to
visit our two children and one grandchild in Florida each
year, and to spend some time in the house we inherited from
my parents in Crossnore, (western) North Carolina.
I hope that we shall have occasion to see you again, perhaps
in Huntsville.
Jean and I send our greetings to Joy, and our prayers for her
health.
