    "ocrText": "Pecember 20, 1929.\nDr. Herman Schlundt,\nUniversity of *issouri,\nColumbia, Mo.\nDear Dr. Schlundt:\nDr. Flinn sent us a copy of the letter which he\nwrote you in reply to copy of letter which you forwarded us pretaining\nto separate publication of our respective work.\nAs you may realize Dr. Flinn's letter was rather\nupsetting to us, for after all we did not feel that the position he\ntook in a number of instances could be justified from his viewpoint.\nI, therefore, went up to see Dr. Flinn and had a very frank discussion\nwith him regarding the entire situation, stating that I felt that we\nwere probably both working under misapprehensions regarding the activit-\nies of the other, and that we would be better off if we could come to\na more frank understanding relative to our relations and future associa-\ntions.\nI found Dr. Flinn in a very receptive mood to discuss\nthis problem, and went over in detail the matters discussed in his\nletter to you. Unfortunately Dr. Flinn talks somewhat differently\nthan he writes, for I may state with reference to the first peragraph of\nhis letter, where he considers me strictly as an outside chemist, that\nhe felt my position was anything but that. The paragraph where he\ndiscusses our position relative to his attitude on men such as Bailey,\nhe apparently misinterpreted my statement with reference to the Curtis\ncase. In this matter the position that I took exception to was not\nhis coming out against the internal administration of radium, but did\nfeel that he overstepped the bounds of propriety when he made reference\nto the Curtis case.\nReferring to the third paragraph in Dr. Flinn's letter:\nI think we entirely clarified that situation, by giving him to understand\nthat we do not bear any hard feelings toward him as a result of his\nactivities in examining Dr. Kneff's patients or the children of some of\nhis patients. Ifurther pointed out to Dr. Flinn that it must be obvious\nto him in view of his activities in these particular cases, our attorneys\ndid not feel that he was of the value to them as we had at one time assumed,\nand we, therefore, had not consulted with him as frequently as we had at\none time. However, I endeavored to make him feel that we were just as\nkindly disposed toward him as ever, and certainly would do everything to\nenable him to continue his work, and had at all times endeavored to give\nhim standing insofar as opportunity presented itself.\nPage -2-\nDr. Flinn is probably a little too sensitive regarding this\nwhole radium situation, due primarily to the fact that he has been most\nseverly criticized by the Public Health School at \"arvard, as well as some\nof our good medical friends in New Jersey.\nOn the whole the conference was most satisfactory, and I think\nwe both felt much better after we had had a real frank discussion of the\npoints involved.\nDr. Flinn wished me to convey to you the fact that he felt that\nhe should be very careful regarding any data published with reference to\nelimination, for such data will be scrutinized carefully by his opponents,\nand criticized if there is any opportunity. He stated that he would\nbe glad to cooperate with you in collecting excreta from patients who are\nnow under his observation, and he could thereby collect some real authentic\ninformation. He seemed disposed to cooperate with you and me as far as\nwe were concerned in continuing this study, and I believe that he was\nsincere in this statement. I, however, feel that this work should be\ncarried on by you and Dr. Flinn, if you care to cooperate, and that I\nshould be left out of the picture in any future work. I think that this\nwill probably be more satisfactory from many angles.\nI trust that when you reply to Dr. Flinn's recent nications\nthat you answer the first letter he wrote you, and pass over the second\none more or less lightly, for I believe that was written by Dr. Flinn when\nhe was not looking at the situation from a cooperative viewpoint.\nThis letter will probably appear rather rambling, but I hope\nthat you are able to correlate it with the correspondence from Br.
