CARDIN BILL WILL HELP FUND MORE CHILD CARE
Bill Would Also Increase Child Care Tax Deductions
for Over 3 Million Families
WASHINGTON - Rep. Benjamin L. Cardin (D-MD) today introduced
legislation that would provide an additional one million, low-income children
with day care, increase the child care tax credit for middle-income families and
help states improve the quality and safety of day care.
The Child Care Improvement Act would provide $7.5 billion over five years
to states in the form of grants for the Child Care and Development Block Grant
program. States would be required to provide a 20% state match and allocate
70% of the new funds to low-income families not benefitting from other forms of
assistance.
"Our nation's children are our most precious resource. We have an
obligation to help working families meet the dual challenges of going to work
and raising a family," said Congressman Ben Cardin, the lead Democrat on the
Human Resources Subcommittee of the Committee on Ways and Means.
"This legislation is aimed at making child care accessible, not just for those on
welfare but also for low and middle-income families not on welfare, that work
hard every day to make ends meet."
