Dó You Know Where Yo
Jacob Inlong
CALIFORNIA
SEVEN-YEAR-OLD JACOB
was worried about the rain.
For the first half of the school
year, the second grader had to
hang around the playground of
his school for two hours every
afternoon until his folks could
pick him up. His working par-
ents hated leaving him without
activities, but had to spend
their child-care resources on
Jacob's 2-year-old brother. Af-
ter months on a waiting list,
Jacob was admitted to one of
his city's best after-school pro-
grams-one inside the school,
40 yards from his playground.
For a snapshot of life in
the after-school hours,
NEWSWEEK canvassed the
country. The pictures and
captions in this package
illustrate the tensions working
parents face-and some of the
solutions they' found. Each
child pictured was interviewed
and photographed with a par-
ent or guardian's knowledge.
