Exposure to child informative programming at age 5 predicted average high school
grades in English, math, and science. Children who watched child informative programs
frequently in preschool had higher grades than infrequent viewers. Viewing predicted
achievement better for boys than for girls.
Sesame Street
Of all the time children watched child informative programs, over half was devoted to
Sesame Street. Sesame Street also has more emphasis on school readiness skills than many
educational programs. Analyses of exposure to Sesame Street provided clear support for the
early learning model. Preschool viewing predicted high school grades equally well for both boys
and girls.
Mr. Rogers' Neighborhood
Although children watched Mr. Rogers less frequently than Sesame Street, exposure to
Mr. Rogers predicted high school grades for boys. Exposure was unrelated to grades for girls.
How Large Are the Differences?
One method of understanding how large the differences in grades are is to examine the
increase in grade point average for every hour per week of preschool viewing. Grade point
average was computed on a 4-point scale with 4=A, 3=B, 2=C, 1=D, 0=F For every hour per
week of viewing child informative programs at age 5, grade point average for English, math, and
science in high school increased by 03. For every hour per week of Sesame Street viewing, high
school grade point average increased by 052. A child who watched Sesame Street for five
hours a week (one hour each week day) at age 5 performed in high school, on average, about
1/4 of a grade level higher than a child who never viewed.
