Summary of Making Television Ratings Work
This report suggests rating systems designed for television, should not only apply to
the age appropriateness of the program, but also to specific categories of advisories
(i.e. sexual content, violence or adult language) maximizing the information available
to parents. The report states that other than sports and hard news, all television
programming should be rated and that those ratings must be more specifically age
based than the current movie rating system; in addition, unlike the movie ratings,
television ratings should be based on scientific data available from child development
studies. Rating information must be published in a format easily accessible to parents
in order to guarantee the success of a television rating system.
