WASHINGTON, D.C. 20006
HELLO SOCKS:
I WOULD LIKE TO INTRODUCE MYSELF TO YOU. MY NAME IS MOUSER, AND I
LIVE WITH A VERY FINE FAMILY IN FLAT ROCK, MICHIGAN. I AM 14 YEARS OLD AND I
HAVE HAD A VERY GOOD LIFE. I AM GLAD TO SEE THAT YOU FINALLY MADE IT TO THE
WHITE HOUSE AFTER ALL THOSE DOGS KEPT RUNNING THE PLACE. IT IS TIME THAT A
GOOD CAT HAD HIS PLACE OF HONOR.
I SAW YOUR PICTURE IN THE PAPER TWO DAYS BEFORE CHRISTMAS, AND MY
FAMILY READ IT TO ME. I DON'T READ THE FINE PRINT VERY GOOD, ANYMORE. I
WOULD SEND YOU A CHRISTMAS CARD, BUT BY THE TIME IT WOULD GET TO YOUR
HOUSE THE HOLIDAY WOULD BE BELATED.
I WOULD VERY MUCH LIKE IF YOU WOULD SEND ME YOUR AUTOGRAPHED
PICTURE. I WILL SHOW IT TO MY FAMILY. I AM SURE THEY WOULD BE IMPRESSED THAT
I HAVE WRITTEN TO SOMEONE IN A PLACE OF IMPORTANCE.
I AM HAVING A HARD TIME GETTING THIS COMPUTER TO PUT DOWN MY WORDS.
I KEEP GETTING MY CLAWS CAUGHT BETWEEN THE KEYS.
RESPECTFULLY,
MOUSER "THE CAT"

Dear SOCKS,
Several weeks ago we wrote to you and requested your picture. In less than
two weeks we received your picture which you had autographed with your paw
print.
We thank you very much. Your picture has been placed into a very nice 8" X 10"
picture frame and has taken a predominant spot with pictures of other feline
friends.
You might like to know that because of your quickness in responding to our
request
well, we consider this an act of efficiency we
have
decided
to
abandon our political attachment of being classed as INDEPENDENTS and have
decided to become "DEMO-CATS".
We hope you approve of our decision.
This letter has been written for us by "our" leader.
Sincerely,

Dear Socks Clinton,
My name is Uhane Nani, which is Hawaiian for "Beautiful Soul". I am a
longhaired miniature Dachshund and I am one and a half years old. I am writing you
because I think that you are the greatest. I am not like other dogs, I would rather play
with you than make you into a mat for my kennel. I wish you could visit me at my home
so we could play football or catch the ball! I really love you and think you are the
greatest first pet ever! Have you ever considered running for office? You are nicer than
Milly Bush and cuter too!!!!! Please write me back. I would love to have yourpaw print.
Have a Merry Christmas and a great New Year! You're the Best!!!!!

Dear Socks,
I am a 10 month old calico (daintly spotted, with a
Cindy Crawford-esque beauty mark on my nose). I
and my owners, Brian and Jennifer Hudson live happily
in Lynchburg, Virginia.
Its great having a 'first cat', especially after Millie (a
canine.. yuk). I send you loads of kitty purrs and a
couple of meows for the new year!

Dear Socks,
Thanks for the picture. My apologies for spelling your name
"Sox" in my last letter. Sorry I haven't written back sooner. I am
writing now, because I thought you might be feeling a little
depressed after the election of all those pit bulls to Congress. I
want to remind you that even though they may be in a position of
power; at heart, they remain frightened little puppies afraid
someone is going to steal one of their bones.
The most important thing to remember is that you will lose
the respect of your true constituency if you try to bark like a
dog. There are a lot of proud felines out here who look to you for
an example; how do you think we feel when you wag your tail, sit
up and beg? The canines will never accept you as one of them, we
were the ones who elected you in the first place. If you're in the
dog house now, it's because you were acting too much like one of
them. Stop eating dog biscuits! Fish is much better for you and
it's a lot less fattening.
The best thing you can do now, is to be yourself; act like a
feline. When you feel your hackles going up, don't be afraid to
hiss and show your claws. You've taken on the dogs before and
managed to come through with most of your fur intact. A cat's best
strategy is to climb to the highest ground and let the dogs chase
around in circles biting off their own tails. Let them bark
themselves hoarse trying to jump up to your level. If you remain
above the fray, they will end up attacking one another and
exhausting themselves.
Keep your eyes open and your claws sharp; when the wolf pack
appears at your door, don't let them catch you napping. A few good
whacks on their noses will send them yelping away with their tails
between their legs. If you're tough and fair, the electorate will
know; no matter how much the corporate sponsored, network news
distorts the public record. Besides, the spectacle of reactionary
pit bulls tearing each other to pieces, will play to the
grandstands of the media circus. There's nothing the networks like
better than free entertainment.
Keep grooming yourself and gathering strength for the next
act - when the big cats show their stuff. You'll have to jump
through fiery hoops and roar from the bottom of your soul. Just
remember: you've done it before
Your Friend and Admirer,
Archie J. Clinton

Dear Socks:
Don't you just love these envelopes. It's wonderful that you could use your
considerable influence to persuade the Post Office people to show some small
respect for the most wonderful of species. Thank you so much.
Are you aware that some towns in this country actually charge their residents
more for a dog (ugh) license than for a cat. Wow! Seems to me they should actually
pay people to keep one of those nasty yappy things. What can be done to correct
this gross injustice. ?
Very truly yours,

The world can seem an endless

On March 30, Scarlet, a calico cat,

Dear Socks:

All US neighborhood cats in Downey, California,
are so proud that you're in the White House, and
we were wondering if we could please have an
autographed photo of you for our very own. We'd
appreciate it very much.
We're sure President Clinton couldn't have done
as good a job as he has so far without your top-notch
advice, and we wish the media would give you more
credit for your fine contributions to our country.
In case you'd like to know what your fellow
citizens are thinking during this election year, we'd
like to see the sardine declared as the "National Fish,"
and we'd like a law written that says everyone must
purr for at least one minute each day, even Sen. Dole!
"Mandatory Purr" could really cheer up our country
quickly, don't you think? So, please pass this message
on to the Prez.
Thanks for your time, Socks, and we look forward
to receiving your photo soon!

Dear Socks,
We don't know if you got our first letter which we wrote in January of 1993, since
we never received a reply. But, we are the felines that wrote to you congratulating you on
your elevation to FIRST CAT. We also gave you some hints about how to conduct
yourself while in the White House.
We are wondering what ever happened to you. We have not heard or read anything
about you since you were banished to the basement. Is it true? What in the world did you
do that is so bad that they had to banish you? If you were banished for scratching on
furniture, shame on them, not you. Don't your people know about scratching posts? Don't
you have one or two of your own? They should have provided you with a scratching post.
We have ours and we don't scratch on the furniture. We cannot think of anything else that
would be so bad as to warrant your banishment from the White House proper.
How is the White House staff treating you? We hope that they have finally gotten
used to having a First Cat instead of First Dog. It is really refreshing to know that one of
our kind is the preeminent animal in the White House.
We know that hundreds of children must miss you when your humans appear on
television (we cats don't have masters and mistresses; we consider humans to be on a par
with us).
How do you like The White House? Would you rather be back in Little Rock?
Don't worry. In 2001, you will be back. Do you know if any of the Republican leaders
have cats, or are they all dog lovers?
By the way, were you responsible for putting those records on the table next to Mrs.
Clinton's bedroom? Are you responsible for writing Primary Colors?
Please let us hear from you.
Sincerely,
Mookie and Lady Cat Seligman

Dear Socks,
How's things going? Everything purring right with
you. Tell your masters hello for me.
What are you doing about cat rights? Now that you are in
the White House, maybe we could start a Catgress. We could
vote for big fish dinners for ourselves, have pages to empty
our cat litter, and argue on television. They have a
network for us already. It's called C-Span.
It must be great being visited by cats from all over the
world. Tell me, "Do cats from India have those little red
dots on their foreheads?"
Heard any good dog jokes lately? I got one for you. Why
do dogs chase cars? It's because they are too dumb to
drive! I hear Toots from Saturday Night Live is now a race
car driver. Yea, he's driving in the Catatonic 500.
I have just one request to make. Could you please send me
a autographed picture of you? My address is:

Mr. Socks Clinton
White House
Washington, DC 20500
Dear Socks:
At last, a cat in the White House. It's about time. And
a democrat to boot. I have been meaning to write this
congratulatory letter for ages but have been very busy
hunting, sleeping, scratching furniture-you know, being
a cat.
I wanted to write when Miss Hillary was pushing for health
reforms. Although I personally hate shots, I think a health
plan for pets is vital.
When Jennifer Whats-her-name is giving Mr. Bill a hard time,
I just want to scratch her to pieces.
Whitewater Really! Aren't there more important things to
worry about like, well, cats?
I personally think your human is doing a fine job. What an
honor it must be for you to help him serve. Your job is to
simply show up, use your box and don't scratch the dignitaries.
What I do is very humble compared to your job, but I do my best
at writing to family and friends. I have trained my humans to
shake hands. I spread JOY throughout the neighborhood by walking
on folk's cars, sharing their cat's food and um, fertilizing
their gardens. JOY takes place in many surprising forms.
I could go on and on about me. But I won't since the purpose
of this letter is to let you know I am on your side. Take good
care of the President and say meowllo to Miss Chelsea.
Your fan,
Clyde Farewell
PS: My family takes in foster cats and readies them for
adoption through Adopt-a-Pet in Rock Hill.
Pretty neat huh?

Dear First Cat Socks,
My name is Fluke and like you, I have white socks front and back. My humans
named me after a summer flounder, it was the only name they could agree upon.
I wanted to write to tell you how proud I am of you representing us felines in
Washington, DC. You have performed admirably in your duties as first cat, because
like me, I believe you have been neutered and declawed. I also am not allowed outside
unless I have my leash on. My humans say it is for my protection, but I know its
because they love me lots. I am an only cat too, so we have lots in common. I hope to
hear from you soon and look forward to having you in the White House for another 4
years. Say hello to Chelsea and Bill and Hillary for me too.

Dear cat Socks!
Best wishes from the beautiful summer of Finland.
This year is supposed to be a very good year of
mice and moles. Unfortunately your hostfamily
hardly serves you these luxory delicacies to eat.
Let's give pleasure to the owls.
I am award of your correspondence with Humphrey
cat. I also have changed letters with Hymphrey cat
and now I have photos on my wall of both of you two
most famous "top cats" in the world.
When you purring lie on your comfortable sofa, I
send you and your secretary warm thoughts from Fin-
land, because you made my dream come true of having
the photo of the "first cat" of United States. So-
metimes it seems that there is nothing but sorrow
and troubles in the world. This kind of correspon-
dence proves anyhow that there is also humanity and
joy which can be seen as positive attitude and
enormous mental activity to life.
I will thank you and wish you all the best for the
coming years.
Catlike regards

Dear Socks,
'Hope that you had a nice Christmas and got lots of nice catnip toys to play with when you're not
preoccupied with matters of state.
Please come to Wisconsin for a visit sometime, perhaps during the 1996 campaign. We have plenty of
cows here and you can have all the milk and dairy products that you want. I understand that Bill likes
ice cream which is also plentiful out there.
When you come, we'd like to have you speak at the vet college on the challenges associated with being
the first cat to occupy the first cat pet position since the Carter administration and any discrimination
that you may have experienced because you are not a dog.
You are an inspiration to us all Socks. Wisconsin voted for Bill in 1992 and will again in 1996 with your
help. Have a wonderful year and be careful not to drink too much egg nog at the White House new
years party!

Dear Socks Clinton:
My name is Elsa Harrington and I am an all-American tabby living in
Fredericksburg, Virginia. I think you are doing a terrific job as First Cat and
want you to know you have my full support in 1996. My human parents are
Carla and Win Harrington, who disagree often with each other about politics
but never about the fact that the White House is a better place now that it has
a First Cat!
Please give my regards to the Clintons (especially Chelsea, whom I'm told is
the No. 1 cat lover in your family). Also, may I make a suggestion for the
President? I believe the press corps would be much kinder to him during
news conferences if you attended, as it is a known fact that our species can
charm even the most cynical reporters.
Warmest meows and purrs to you and you family,

Dear Socks:
I think it is great to have a cat in the White House. Cats
have been getting a bad rap for years. I am glad you are
behaving yourself (except for occassional scratching) and
showing everyone how great cats are. Remember: Cats
rule and dogs drool.

ODE TO SOCKS
We read in the paper if we'd write to you, Socks,
You would send us your picture done up in a box
With your own autograph and a paw-print or two,
And possibly tied with a ribbon of blue.
We are six feline fans and admirers of you,
Two of us wearing a tuxedo, too.
Three are attired in our black ties and tails,
(will you pardon us now while we sharpen our nails?)
The sixth is a clone of finicky Morris, the star,
But we all are quite happy right here where we are.
So a photo of you we would gladly accept,
For you are our hero- and truly adept.
For what other cat has achieved such acclaim?
For to dwell in the Whitehouse is sure to bring fame
For your protocol, dignity, tact and elan.
You have played 'round the feet of the "Royalty" clan!
You are ever most diligent your duty not to shirk,
Tho we know your requirements don't include mouse-work.
So please do us this favor, six new friends you have found,
And we're ever so grateful, and eternally bound
To be singing your praises to all who will hear
As we wish you a MEOWY CHRISTMAS and a PURR-FECT NEW-YEAR!

Dear Boots,
I would like to wish you a "Happy New Year"! I am a cat lover and have many friends
that are cat lovers as well. I heard about you and your secretary who answers your
mail on N.P.R. this morning. It sounds like you have a wonderful life in the White
House. I'm sorry you've been banned from the East Wing! Sometimes humans don't
understand that furniture is so much fun to climb and play around on!
I would love a picture of you. If possible, could you send us two pictures, one made
out to Matt and one made out to Beth. I would really appreciate this as these two
friends of mine love cats as much as I do!
Thanks for your time! I hope that they will reconsider the ban in the East Wing!

Dear Socks,
I have just read in our local paper (my people place it strategically under my litter box), that you
do answer mail sent to you. I would be most honored if you would respond to my letter. I think
it is terrific that you have all that space to roam and rein. Myself, I have just moved in with my
owner's daughter and her family. Quite nice and loads of room. (We moved up from a mobile
home with just the two of us to a large colonial home with two teenage boys in residence) My
only complaint is that they have a small canine in residence. A miniature long-haired dashound,
which is actually my size. Well, the first day I let him know that he can't push me around. We
have since called a truce.
By the way, I am a tortoise, female feline and in good shape if I do say so myself. Keep up the
good work there in The White House and send my a picture, if you would please.

Dear Socks:
Holiday greetings to The First Cat. I don't have
a cat but I feed the neighborhood cat; Blitz. I thought
that showing kindness to Blitz was good because Blitz is
an outdoor cat. Are you an outdoor cat or an indoor cat?
DO you sleep with the President and First Lawy & with
Chelsea? Do you eat hard cat food or soft canned cat food?
I feed Blitz hard puppy food that the merchant at the feed
store gives me. Sometimes, the neighborhood dogs eat what
I put out for Blitz. Sometimes, BlueJays eat what I put
out for Blitz. But Blitz is a very smart cat. She meows
at me to get my attention when she sees me out and about
in the yard. That way, she makes sure that I give her
something to eat. I pet her and she meows and I feel good
about feeding her.
Please write me back with the answers to my questions
and give my best wishes to the Clintons.
Your truly,
