WHAT IS WIFV?
Mission Statement: Women in Film & Video (WIFV) of Washington, DC is a nonprofit organization dedicated to
advancing professional development and achievement for women working in all areas of film, video, multimedia, and
related disciplines. The D.C. chapter is part of on international network of 40 chapters around the world. Established in
1979, WIFV-DC supports women in the industry by promoting equal opportunities, encouraging professional and
educational development, serving as on information network, and educating the public about women's creative and
technical achievements.
WHO ARE OUR MEMBERS?
Women in Film & Video is an active organization that is run by o volunteer Board of Directors elected by the
membership. Our membership, numbering over 800, includes dynamic professionals who represent every aspect of the
industry - from producers and directors to accountants and lawyers, from camera and sound technicians to actors and
animators. Our supporters also include individuals, corporations, and other organizations interested in supporting and
promoting the creativity and skills women bring to the film and video industry.

Mary Steenburgen is an Academy Award winning actress (Melvin and Howard). who
constantly re-defines herself both through challenging roles in films like What's Eating
Gilben Grape, and standout performances in blockbusters like Philadelphia.
Stoenburgen's film career has encompassed an eclectic mix of films including Time After
Time, A Midsummer Night's Sex Comedy. Cross Creek. One Mugic Christmas, Romantic
Comedy, Dead of Winter, End of the Line. of which she was also executive producer,
Miss Firecrucker, Purenthood, What's Earing Gilben Grape, Philadelphia, The Buicher's
Wife, Back 10 the Future III and The Grass Harp, with Walter Matthau and Jack Lemmon.
Steenburgen's television appearances include the critically acclaimed and hugely successful
NBC miniseries "Gulliver," in which she portrayed Mrs. Gulliver opposite Ted Danson,
the BBC/Showtime miniseries "Tender is the Night", for which she won a British
Broadcasters Guild Award, and "The Attic: The Hiding of Anne Frank", which brought
her an Emmy nomination. She also starred opposite her husband, Ted Danson, weekly in
their CBS television series "Ink" Next, Steenburgen stars in the CBS movie "About
Sarah" to air fall 1998.
On the London stage, Steenburgen starred in "Holiday", directed by Lindsay Anderson. In
New York she starred in the Roundabout Theatre production of George Bernard Shaw's
"Candida". In Los Angeles. she starred with Jean Smart in "Marvin's Room" at The
Tiffany Theater.
A native of Little Rock, Arkansas, Steenburgen is the daughter of a railroad conductor and
a public high school secretary. She began her career at the age of 19 at New York City's
Neighborhood Playhouse.
While working as a waitress and a cashier between performances, Mary and four other
Playhouse alumni started the Cracked Token improvisational troupe by doing skits for The
Bureau of Alcoholism's halfway houses throughout New York. A year after its founding,
Cracked Tokens became the resident company at the Manhattan Theater Club.
Jack Nicholson discovered Steenburgen in the reception room at Paramount's casting
offices in New York, and. after being impressed by her reading, sent her to Hollywood for
a screen test. Steenburgen soon found herself working opposite Nicholson in the off-beat
Western Goin' Soush. which launched her film career.
