I am writing today to invite you to join the Board of
Directors of the White House Endowment Fund. The White
House is a unique symbol of our nation's government. This
living monument has many functions. The White House serves
as the private residence of the First Family, a public
space for the entertainment of official visitors, and a
museum of our nation's history. During 1993, there were
more than one and one-half million visitors to the White
House.
During the month of January 1995, the White House Blue
Room has undergone a major refurbishing. This is the first
major work done on the Blue Room since the 1972 project of
First Lady Patricia Nixon. Decorative changes included
wallpaper, fabrics, draperies and a new carpet.
Architectural details were gilded and painted. Monroe
furniture placed in the Blue Room during the historic White
House renovations of First Lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis
remains in the room. The refurbishing reflects the Monroe
period.
Under the direction of the Committee for the
Preservation of the White House, the Blue Room project is
underwritten by the White House Endowment Fund.
Recognizing the need for permanent support to maintain the
White house collections of art and period furniture, First
Lady Barbara Bush established the White House Endowment
Fund in 1990.
Mrs. Nancy Folger has generously agreed to serve as
Chair of the Endowment Fund. Nancy will call you soon to
discuss with you details of the Endowment Fund and the
responsibilities of its Board of Directors.

collection and the acquisition of additional pieces to
enhance the collection, the efforts of the Endowment Fund

The following memo will deal with four issues:
1. A report on the Susan Brofy meeting.
2.
Some questions regarding the event on February 17.
3. The process we will use to add people to the Endowment
Committee.
4. A list of names that we might invite to be on the
committee.
1. Notes on the Brofy meeting.
Susan sees no problem in having the Endowment Committee explore
the possibility of a Memorial Contribution to Former First
Ladies.
She offered to advise Bitsey where she thought the request would
go. We, may it clear that we were only letting them know what the
committee was going to do and not asking for help. She said she
didn't see a problem with exploring the issues with members who
in the past have been very friendly to preservation issues.
2. The February 17, Blue Room Reception:
I believe that we agreed that a list of potential prospects would
be invited to the 4:00 Reception. Bitsey has submitted a list.
a. Do we need additional lists and from whom?
b. We will need to have the list reviewed by the end of

this week in order to get out the invitations. Do you
want to take the list on your trip?
C. A proposal was sent in for the events of the day - do we
need to follow-up? With whom?
3. Adding new members to the committee:
We have had some success in adding people to the committee.
There are 25 spots 13 of which have been filled. To be clear the
way we get clearance to sent a letter of invitation to join the
committee is the following:
a. A annotated list of potential names is submitted to MAW for
her review.
b. The annotated list is cleared with appropriate WH staff.
C. A final list is submitted to the First Lady.
d. Letters are sent to approved names.
e.
Follow-up telephone calls are made by someone.
