one minute and snuggle
up the next.
Peggy Upchurch, a former
York County (S.C.) Council mem-
ber, nailed our country's attitude
toward women generally and Hil-
lary Rodham Clinton specifically
when she said:
"People like
a woman who
drinks her
scotch
straight. Peo-
ple like a
woman who
serves milk
and cookies.
But they don't
like a woman
who does
Clinton
both."
Bull's-eye.
And this has almost nothing to
do with alcohol. What it has to do
with is that people still don't like a
woman who acts like a man.
By "people," I mean both men
and women, because some of the
harshest criticism leveled at Hil-
lary has come from women.
Now why are we so hard on
women who step out of their hoop
skirts and into the hoop-la?

she nearly chokes.
Don't confuse the issue
Let's think this through.
It's OK for a woman to serve
milk and cookies.

womanly Woman, declare your-
self, and don't confuse the issue
by turning coat and doing Wom-
anly Woman Things.
If you're a Lizzie Borden,
charged with giving your father
and stepmother 40 whacks (very
manly, right?), don't let us catch
you cooling your lattice-work pies
on the windowsill.
If you're a Lorena Bobbitt, who
severed it with one whack (very
unwomanly); banish your barbe-
cue sauce recipe.
If you're a Blanche Taylor
Moore or a Velma Barfield, who
poisoned their husbands, lose
your banana pudding recipe.
If you're a Shannon Faulkner,
shred your mother's Waldorf
salad recipe.
Scarlett O'Hara, the mercurial
heroine of "Gone with the Wind,'
exhibited a masculine willfulness
and determination. And did we
ever see her flipping those flap-
jacks? If we had, maybe the novel
wouldn't have sold as well.

About 15 years ago, a male edi-
tor here wrote a first-person story
about raising his son solo. As
soon as the paper hit the door-
steps, a dozen of his neighbors
(women) got out their mixing
bowls and whipped him up some
bread. Bless his little heart.
It's OK for the big man to do

But not for the little woman to

We like to remember Dolly
Madison for inventing ice cream,
and not for rescuing official pa-
pers when the British burned
Washington in 1814.
And Betsy Ross for stitching up
those ole Stars and Bars, and not

I have to wonder if Jackie O.
didn't cultivate her whispery
voice to camouflage her power.
It's human nature to categorize
each other. But let's quit slicing
women up: This part for the

THE LITTLE ENGINE THAT COULD

Chug, chug, chug. Puff, puff, puff. Ding-dong,

ding-dong. The little train rumbled over the
tracks. She was a happy little train for she had
such a jolly load to carry. Her cars were filled
full of good things for boys and girls.
There were toy animals-giraffes with long
necks, teddy bears with almost no necks at all,
and elephant. There were dolls, and
a puppet,
and the funniest little toy clown you
ever
saw. And there were cars full of engines,
airplanes, hula hoops, picture pussies,
juggling balls, books, and every kind of thing
boys or girls could want.
But that was not all. Some of the cars were

filled with all sorts of good things for boys and

apples, bottles of milk for their breakfasts, fresh
vegetables for their dinners, peppermint drops,

girls in the city will be happy because you helped
us, kind Little Blue Engine."
And the Little Blue Engine smiled and seemed
to say as she puffed steadily DOWN the mountain:
