Dear Hillary,
Thank you for your generous support of Hunter College's attempt to raise money for additional
scholarships for young men and women who might otherwise not have been able to continue
their education.
By honoring me with their Athena Award on the 28th of October Hunter chose someone as
"Woman of the Year" to whom few were obligated and thus reduced the possibilities of
attracting large gifts. With your endorsement as Honorary Chair of this award dinner we were
able to more completely validate the importance of the event. So many fund-raisers take place
each evening everywhere that it has become impossible to focus and to support everything we
believe in. With your warm approval and encouragement we moved ahead and actually
surpassed the projections for both gifts and attendance at this relatively intimate gathering at the
Pierre Hotel.
Although we don't know each other well I like to believe we do. I believe we share many
common goals and I sincerely hope I can make some worthwhile contributions, hands on, during
your next four years in Washington.
With my warmest thanks.
Happy holidays and joyful inauguration.

Dear Jane:
Thank you so much for your letter. Hillary and I have been
deeply touched by the expressions of support and encouragement
we have received from people who care about the future of our
country, and we're glad you took the time to write.
As you know, I share your deep concern about the debate
in Congress over welfare reform. I have long believed that
government must work in partnership with people -- providing
opportunity, encouraging responsibility, and strengthening
families for the future. Our goal should be to ensure that
poor children and families can become self-sufficient, not
destitute.
My Administration is doing everything we can to bring about the
changes that Americans want and need -- real changes that will
guarantee our country a more secure, more prosperous future. As
we continue to work to ensure greater opportunity for hardworking
families like yours, I appreciate your insights, and I encourage
your continued involvement.
You and Hilary have my best wishes.
Sincerely,

President and Mrs. William Clinton
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue
Washington, D.C.
Dear President and Mrs. Clinton,
When I voted for you--and it may be politically incorrect to say so, but I really did vote for both
of you, because I saw you on television together talking about your marriage, and I know that,
whatever has passed between you, whatever pain and anger and grief you have endured privately
together, it has forged of you a team, and I admire you for that--I was filled with such hope and
energy. At the inauguration, you had a poet, Maya Angelou, read. A poet--someone who dares
to dream and envision, someone who looks truth in the face--was reading at our President's
Inaugural. I knew our President was a man to look truth in the face.
You seemed to understand, as no recent President has seemed to want to understand, how hungry
people like myself are for some ray of light, some hope of reward for years of long, hard toil
which has gone chiefly to benefit others. I was thrilled when I heard about the plans to reform
health care, and even more thrilled to learn that Hillary Rodham Clinton would lead that effort. I
was so certain you'd succeed I made changes in my own life in anticipation of that reform.
Let me tell you a little about myself.
(b)(6)
002
002
(b)(6)
Bad as things are, though, I know they'll get better. But only if you serve another term, and only
if you can persuade the Congress to put aside its mean-spirited Contract On America.
President Clinton, I listened to your State of the Union address tonight, and Mrs. Clinton, I have
watched the Whitewater committee yapping at your heels for months now.
I want to tell you, Mr. President, that you are on the right track. Most of those who have turned
to the government for help are helped; and once they're on they're feet again, they move on,
contribute, and help others. It is a partnership, and can be more of one. We understand and
support your message, and there are many, many of us. Unfortunately, we are also, all too often,
non-voters. Estranged and disenfranchised, or facing obstacles like lack of transportation to the
polls, we are among that segment of the population that shrugs off this civic duty. More must be
done to bring this portion of the electorate to a realization of its power and influence.
Mrs. Clinton, you have my sympathy. Rep. 'Amato's committee has been free to sift and
winnow through every detail of your past, desperately searching for something with which to light
the bonfire around the stake to which he clearly has mentally tied you. Who among us could
withstand this minute scrutiny? I'm reminded of the psychiatrist who diagnosed his early-arriving
patients as compulsive, his tardy patients as hostile, and his prompt patients as dependent. No
matter what you do or don't do, it's made to look suspicious. I do not know if other Americans
are as sick of this inquisitorial Star Chamber approach as I am; but I wish it would end. Now they
are hauling you before a Grand Jury at a time and for reasons that look like grand-standing.
Not long ago, Mrs. Clinton, I cleared off the desk in my home office. I found papers there that
were 2 years old, and I haven't moved recently, as you have. I know you have more help with
your papers than I have, but I suspect that you also have a few more papers to keep track of. It is
no mystery to most of us how files--even important ones--can be misplaced or misfiled. It is also
no surprise to me that some employee, perhaps fearful of reprimand or dismissal, might secretly
place those papers where they'd be discovered rather than own up to having mislaid them in the
first place.
This letter is already too long, yet there is so much more I wish I could say--about welfare and
single moms and student loans, and about hope and strength and courage for you in this time of
trouble.
Please stay the course; I know there are so many of us who believe in you and what you're trying
to do. Keep waging peace, Mr. President; and Mrs. Clinton, I suspect your accusers need only a
little more rope with which to hoist high their own petard.
Sincerely,
jam/Hrit

DEJA' VU IN DC
It's fascinating to watch the evolution of the Clinton-Clinton administration.
Mature Americans have lived through all this before.
Bill Clinton is a quick study.
He was elected President four years before he expected to be. He went to
Washington ill-prepared either in support staff or in the application of appropriate
protocol.
One of several books which helped him and Hillary to adapt is the Pulitzer
prize-winning biography of Eleanor and Franklin Roosevelt during the war years
called NO ORDINARY TIME.
While the author tends to be reverential, especially where Eleanor is
concerned, it is worthwhile reading.
The White House of the 1940s, literally, was neglected, comparatively
primitive. It's conduct was less sophisticated, less formal, under less public
scrutiny.
Both Eleanor and Franklin were allowed romances on the side without
media attention.
Our nation's dominant mindset of that era credits FDR with both military
strategy and the accelerated social evolution. Not so. Careful retrospection
reveals that the persistent agitation for the betterment of blacks, civilian and
military, came from Eleanor.
2- DEJA VU
During the White House years Eleanor was away more than she was home,
seeking perhaps to outdistance her loneliness with a frenetic schedule of
appearances, most of which were devoted to social issues -- unionization,
discrimination, recognition of the wartime problems of working mothers, etc.
Limelight endows national leaders with an aura of invincibility to everyone
but themselves.
Some have tried, with limited success, to hide; modern, multiple media
scrutiny, for better or worse, does not allow that.
President Truman confronted critics with surprising success.
President Reagan ducked from criticism behind Irish eyes and a gorgeous
grin.
Recent generations of Presidents have sought liaison with peers. FDR was
never happier than when Winston Churchill was weeks at the White House, in and
out of the President's quarters at all hours, sometimes sipping a martini in his
underwear.
Also, of course, beginning with FDR, it has been deemed politically
strategic to have the respect of one's counterparts made obvious to the electorate.
So, while FDR steered our Ship Of State, Eleanor, subtly or overtly, steered
FDR in his compassionate embrace of our polyglot population.
There are significant similarities in our present First Family's employment
of their respective talents.
Does this mean that the Roosevelts are a template by which the Clintons
measure themselves? Only very imprecisely but to this extent certainly:
Hillary is more the dialectical liberal.
Bill is the more pragmatic politician.
They make a complimentary team

&
Dear Mrs. Clinton,
Thanks you so much for the opportunity and for the privilege of
meeting with you on April 4th. I know it must have been a very difficult
day for you and so appreciated that you took so much time to be with us
and to listen to what each of us had to say.
Just last week I was on a radio show and talking about values and
what we must do to keep our children and families healthy. Callers were
asking for better programs in their communities and schools for kids and
teens.
I found myself talking about your book, and saying, "that if you want
these programs for your children and teens, it makes a difference who is
in office." I talked about how important it is to know who your local,
state and national representatives are, and that who is in office can make
a big difference.
I then said, "If you want the programs you are asking for, you need to
support The President, and you need to vote, and vote for The President" I
plan to say this whenever I speak. I had never done this before and it is a
direct result from the meeting with you.
As I said in the meeting, I do hope that the phrase "in the best
interest of the child" (lifted from Sally Provence and Al Solnit who have
also taught me SO much) will be part of the campaign, as one of The
President's values. In fact, it will weave in with the STAND FOR CHILDREN
RALLY on June 1st. In some ways, I think using the word "child" or
"children" whenever the word family is used resonances with "the folks
out there."
People from all economic strata are worried about our nation's
children and if there is some way we can tap into that fear -- not using
negatives tactics of fear and shame as the Right does -- but rather using
the notion of "what is in the best interest of the child," I think that could
be a powerful message.
I hope you do not think it presumptuous for me so speak about
children's issues when you have done so much and are doing so much for
our nation's children and families. I feel that you and The President can
make "the case for children" and that what we do for our children --
pre-natally through adolescence -- and that what happens to our children
will determine the future health of our nation.

Dear Mrs. Clinton:
Ron Lieber and I, two recent graduates of Amherst College, are
pleased to pass along a copy of our new book, Taking Time Off for you and
your daughter.
We recommend you start reading on page 46, where you'll find the
when
story of Tracy Johnston. Tracy worked on your husband's campaign in 1992
and also did the advance work for your speech at Wellesley that year. She
credits her becoming a Rhodes Scholar to the fact that she took time off to
do something different before graduating from college.
Please thank your husband for his continued support of programs like
Americorps that make it possible for more and more students to take time
off and serve their communities.
I hope you both have a chance to "take time off" after winning the
upcoming election.
Sincerely,

Dear Hillary:
While there are several opinions why Clinton-Gore carried Missouri, I believe I have
the real answer. Please see the enclosed copy and particularly photo of you in University of
Missouri jacket for reference to my theory. As you know, all Missourians are quite proud of
their University in Columbia. A photograph of a genuinely happy First Lady wearing a
University of Missouri jacket, particularly during football season, had to be a critical factor in
the reelection victory (at least I think so). I have to tell you this is just about the best photo
I've seen from the campaign.
Not to give you fashion advice, but I do think that the black could be worn to any one
of a number of formal events that you may attend in the next month including the
inauguration.
Please forgive this slightly tongue and cheek letter, but I couldn't resist getting in my
two cents.
Sincerely,
Steph Stephen L. Hill, Jr.

MEMORANDUM TO PAM CICETTI
FROM:
Kelly Craighead
RE:
September 5, 1996, Trip Of HRC To Texas
During our recent trip to Texas, HRC asked me to take down the following information:
1.
Should one exist, Dagmar Hamilton, from the LBJ School of Public Affairs,
would like to volunteer her time and experience on an Advisory Committee for the Clinton
Library.
2.
Ms. Hamilton worked with HRC during the Watergate hearings and is looking
for another colleague of theirs, Terri Fitzpatrick
3.
Dagmar Hamilton can be reached at the University of Texas, Austin, LBJ School of
Public Affairs, Austin, TX 78713. Phone: 512-471-4962 or 512-327-3201.
4716968
Would you mind coordinating the follow-up for Ms. Hamilton? If you are not the most
appropriate person to pass this kind of work along to, could you suggest who might be?
Thank you Pam. Let me know if I need to be doing something else in this regard.

EXECUTIVE OFFICE OF THE PRESIDENT
25-Sep-1996 10:43am
TO:
Rebecca A. Cameron
FROM:
Pamela Cicetti
Domestic Policy Council
SUBJECT: inquiry about Clinton Presidential Library
Rebecca,
per our conversation, when HRC was in Texas recently she ran into
a woman named Dagmar Hamilton at the LBJ School of Public Affairs.
She worked with her on the Impeachment Committee. She would like
to volunteer her time and experience on any advisory committee for
the future Clinton Library. If you discern that it is just too
early for such a thing, let me know and I will call her. Just let
me know how you want to handle it, but HRC did want me to
follow-up in some way.
Thanks, Pam

Washington, D.C. 20500-2000
INITIALS: ADB DATE: 11/8/13
Dear Hillary:
Congratulations on a well-won victory. Kristina and I are elated by the results, which
were especially satisfying because you and the President attained it by avoiding the type of
vitriolic, corrosive assaults on your opponents that all too often poison political discourse.
I was at the White House Wednesday for the homecoming and delighted in seeing the
happiness in all those tired faces. I didn't speak because of the crush, but I do hope that
Kristina and I will have a chance to visit with you in the not too distant future.
In the meantime, our wish for you is that during the next four years you can
concentrate your talents and energies on your passions such as improving the lot of children,

Dear Mrs. Clinton:
I had intended lo autograph this copy of my recently published book before I sent it to you.
0166
(b)(6)
I
would be happy to sign it the next time I see you.
Children in Jeopardy is a compilation of my thoughts about and experiences in working with
children at risk. I have written it to provide individuals with rational arguments for supporting
pro-children policies and programs.
There can be no argument that children are our nation's future. Yet, our society is
overwhelmed by a large number of high risk children born with extremely poor prospects for
optimal development. Most of these are unwanted children. They are targeted for failure
before they are old enough to learn how to read.
The prospects for all of these high risk children must become the priority and focus of all of
our attention. Otherwise, these children will continue disproportionately to contribute to our
failing schools and our nation's frightening violence, crime and prison statistics. No silver
bullet will solve the complex problems facing high risk children. However, there are
intervention and prevention strategies that work.
I have spent many years trying to influence politicians and voters to promote research and
training in early childhood development, and to influence public policy in order to support
innovative approaches to serving young women and their families to prevent school failure.
However, I am only one voice. To effect change, we need a multitude of voices from all walks
of life.
I encourage you to read this book. I hope you can use some of the information to inform your
friends and colleagues about the need for all of us to take action on behalf of our children.
Sincerely,
Irving/ah
Irving B. Harris
P.S.
If you don't have time to read the entire book at this time, I encourage you to start with
the areas that interest you most. This book does not have to be read in one sitting.

Dear Hillary,
When I lost a very close race for mayor to a Jesse
Helms' protege, you and your husband were gracious enough to
think of me election night and in the months afterwards. I
have not forgotten that, and I wanted you to know that I, my
wife, my daughter and my son all send our support and
admiration to you in this meanest of election seasons.
As a City Councillor and candidate for mayor, I got a
tiny taste of the bitter publicity that is directed toward
those in public office today. I cannot imagine what you all
endure in Washington at the White House. I have been both
outraged and puzzled by the intensity of the attacks on you.
Coming from Arkansas, I take special umbrage because I know
the good works you achieved there. That is what prompted me
to write this letter.
I know how disheartening and depressing one feels when
he or she is under unflagging and unfair attacks. I also
know the hope and comfort one feels from an encouraging word.
Hence, I send you this message of support and the certain
knowledge that there are thousands--yea, millions--like me
who believe in you and your dreams for a better America. We
are here, we are with you.

The First Lady's office forwarded to us a copy of your recent letter to her. We appreciate

While we are not in a position to make use of your services ourselves, I thought you

March, NetDays in states all across the country are volunteer efforts by companies, schools,
parents, engineers and students to connect classrooms to the information superhighway. The
long-term goal is to provide computers, training, software and Internet access to every student

Greetings from your old pal on the "D/L," which is
an urban term for "down low," in hiding or avoiding
the limelight!
I hope Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Years and of
course MLK Day have been pleasant and fulfilling
for you.
In a nutshell, I'm just writing to say hi and hang
tough. Stevie Wonder can see that you're catching
hell; but you're a strong woman, and as the old folk
say, "What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger."
You'll be fine.
Give my love to the President and Chelsea.
Whenever I watch her boarding the helicopter on
CNN, it's amazing to see that little girl from
Arkansas, growing up to be a classy young woman
right before our eyes. I'm proud of our
"First Teenager."
Anyway, stay strong. In public life we only hear the
negative, but there are many friends and Americans
who are pulling for you in this madness.
Much Love,

Dear Bill,
I am in Paris finishing a film and awakened before dawn. I imagine
you have left this paralyzed city, and once again with a flourish of
good will and strength that has inspired me to take pen to paper and
write this letter.
I want to congratulate you on your success as President. When I first
met you, your kindness of heart was bleeding through your suit. Your
dream to help this troubled world was a deep and honest commitment.
I believed in you then as a compassionate leader.
You have undergone tremendous scrutiny, which is symptomatic of the
angry and vindictive times in which we live, with a dangerously omnipotent
press. They can undermine the stability and well-being of our sense of
security.
You have in these few years shown a tenacity in expressing your ideals with
passion and humanity. Not only are you paving a new road to peace among
men and nations, but you are restoring long-lost pride in being an
American.
When the Los Angeles riots erupted after the Rodney King verdict, I wrote
a letter to President Bush because I felt that when these desperate lost souls
were setting fire to their own neighborhoods, it was a bloodcurdling scream
for help, a cry of hopeless children, lost and frightened, frightened for their
futures, full of doubt, fear and hopelessness, a bedding ground for hatred
Mr. William Jefferson Clinton

and aggression. I asked him, "Who is nurturing our family of Americans?
Who is instilling a feeling of security and safety? When you took the
Presidential oath, you adopted a nation of children of all ages and made a
promise to protect and serve them, a symbolic father-figure. When a nation
feels they have a compassionate leader, a sense of well-being flows from
the doors of the White House into all the main arteries of our great nation."
He never answered my letter.
You have, by being who you are from the core, and I will continue to
applaud you as our brilliant and kind-hearted, peace-keeping leader.
I will always be there to help in anyway I can.
Gratefully yours,
Joedie Hawn

balancing the ailing heart is a more serious endeavor.

Dear Hillary:
The enclosed picture, taken at a seminar for newly appointed District Judges, vividly
depicts the Clinton Administration's success in equal access to judicial appointments. I wanted
you and the President to see the diverse faces of those for whom you both have made lifetime
dreams come true.
The second enclosure is an article in Sunday's Atlanta Constitution regarding your ardent
supporter Governor Zell Miller, which I thought you would find interesting.
I am enjoying It Takes a Village. Stay strong! There are so many who support you.
With best personal regards, I am
Sincerely,
Frank

Dear Mrs. Clinton:
I just received the pictures from your lecture at our law school last month. Thank you
so much for signing one of the pictures for me. I will proudly display it in my office.
Because of my age (I am 33 years old), I have a close bond to many of the students.
They regularly come by my office and discuss future plans. I can tell you that you had a
tremendous impact on them with your presentation. All of them commented that your lecture
was one of the best they have ever attended. It got a lot of them thinking about doing public
interest work.
If you ever need assistance from someone in the academic sector, you are always free
to contact one of us at SMU Law School. I will be a visiting scholar at the University of Tokyo
Faculty of Law for the 1996-97 academic year. My mother is Japanese leading to my interest
in Japan. If I can be of assistance to you in Tokyo, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely yours,
Chbs A Ham

Dear Hillary:
Congratulations on the trip to Bosnia and nearby points. The themes of
reconciliation and tolerance came through loud and clear. It is hard to imagine what
messages could be more important.
I am so sorry that I cannot join you on April 10 for the event dealing with
Chernobyl. I am sure it will be a very good occasion, but we have a Carnegie board
meeting that day.
I have greatly enjoyed our recent discussions and look forward to seeing you
again before long.
With every good wish,
As always,
