Dear George:
On Friday, April 15 in Los Angeles there will bc an all-day conference sponsored by the
Forum on Children's Issucs entitled "Achieving the Dream: Health Care Healthy Kids".
The Forum was founded last year by Eileen Norton to focus the attention of the public
and policy makers on issues of concern to children. (Eileen is on the board of CDF and
is a close friend of Marian Wright Edelman's.)
The two key conference speakers are Rcp. Pat Schroeder and Marian Wright Edelman
The thrust of the conference is to make the concerns of children a significant component
in the national debate about health care reform.
Eilcen would very much like to sec if it would be possible for the First Lady to send a
brief videotaped message of welcome that could open the conference and help set the tonc
and focus the discussion throughout the day.

group here in California where she spoke by satellite or vidcotapc and it got some good
message play in the media.

BIOGRAPHY
Eileen Norton is vice-president of the Norton Family Foundation, a grant-giving
institution which funds diverse cultural and humanitarian projects. Mrs. Norton's
philanthropic interests range from issues of illiteracy, child welfare and women's
concerns to her involvement in the arts.
Mrs. Norton currently serves on the boards of the Children's Defense Fund, the
New Museum, and the Hollywood Policy Center.
Mrs. Norton is actively involved in supporting the National Resources Defense
Council, the National Abortion Rights Action League, the Children's Defense Fund,
and the Los Angeles Women's Foundation. The Normans also contribute regularly to
educational organizations including the United Negro College Fund, Crossroads
School, Reed College and the California Institute for the Arts.

Mrs. Norton holds a Master of Science in
Bilingual Education from the University of Southern California and graduated Cum
Laude with u Bachelor of Arts in French from the University of California, Los
Angeles. Following her graduation from USC, she spent several years as an
elementary teacher in the Los Angeles Unified School District where she taught English
as a second language and worked as a bilingual coordinator.
She and her husband, Peter, have two young children and live in Santa Monica,

Rep. Schroeder will given a luncheon address reporting on what Congress is doing
on children's health care issues, and Edelman will close the conference with a dinner
speech entitled "Ensuring Children's Health".
Other speakers at the conference include Dr. Reed Tuckson, president of Drew
University Medical School, Los Angeles County District Attorney Gilbert Carcotti and
Dr. Susan Builey, is senior spokeswoman for the Clinton Administration's health care
reform plan. Bailcy will participate in an afternoon panel debate on the competing health
care reform proposals currently before Congress.
Attending the conference will be an invited audience of 125 professionals in the
fields of health care and children's issues.
"Achieving the Dream: Health Care Healthy Kids" is the second annual
conference sponsored by the Forum on Children's Issues. Last year's conference focused
on education reform.

Defense Fund leader Marian Wright Edelman will be among the speakers at "Achies ing
the Dreum: Health Care Healthy Kida", a day-long conference taking pluce on Friday,
April 15 at the Century Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles.
"Our conference is designed to help put the needs of children ut the forefront of the
national debate about health care reform," said Eileen Norton, the director of the Forum on
Children's Issues which is sponsoring the event. "Children who don't get an early start
with preventative health care end up costing families and society many millions of
unnecessary dollars and end up becoming unhcalthy adults who create a heavy burden on
our health care system", Norton said. "There has been plenty of debate and attention in the
media about the politics of health care reform, and some amention to how reform would
affect certain segments of society [seniors, people with HIV and AIDS, clc.], but next-to
no debate about how reform will affect children and what we ought to do to give kids a
healthy start in life. We hope that this conference will help to get that debate started."

An audience consisting of White House staff, Department and Agency
representatives, and special friends of the White House
Description
The President and Mrs. Clinton are hosting a White House tribute to
the members of the 1994 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Teams. In
addition to the athletes, it will be attended by an audience of
approximately 350 people, a group that includes White House Staff,
Federal Department and Agency officials, ACOG representatives, and
other friends and guests of the White House.
Assuming favorable weather, the event will be held on the South Lawn
(the side facing the Washington Monument), directly in front of the
South Portico (the rounded portion of the White House with the
balconies on the second and third floors). The President and Mrs.
Clinton will be on a small platform positioned directly in front of
the ground floor entrance to the South Portico. The athletes will
stand beside them on the ground and up either of two stairways to
the left and right of the President, and along the second-floor
balcony connecting the top of the two stairways.
The program will begin with the athletes moving out onto the second-
floor balcony and arranging themselves along the balcony and down
the stairways while the Marine Band plays appropriate music. When
all are in place the band will render musical honors, the President
and Mrs. Clinton will be announced, and will move out to the
platform. The President will then deliver remarks which will be
followed by a presentation of a team jacket by 1994 Olympic Winter
Team flag-bearer Cammy Myler. At the conclusion of the remarks, the
President's schedule permitting, there may be an opportunity for a
receiving line for athletes.

1:30 P.M. Athletes, officers and staff arrive in busses at Northwest
Gate (Pennsylvania Avenue side) of White House.
Proceed into White House via North Portico.
Note: Picture ID should be available.
Group will be directed to the East Room, where they will
receive a briefing on what will transpire.
2:00 P.M. Staff and officers will be directed out to the South Lawn
to join the other members of the audience. Weather and
ground conditions permitting, the audience will be in
chairs. If the ground is too wet they will stand.
Athletes move to Blue Room.
2:15 P.M. Athletes walk out of Blue Room and move into their
positions along the balcony and down onto the stairways.

CAMMY MYLER
Cammy Myler of Lake Placid, New York, age 26, was the U.S. flag
bearer at Opening Ceremonies of the 1994 Olympic Winter Games in
Lillehammer, Norway. This was an honor accorded her by her
teammates, who selected her for this position by ballot.
Cammy is a five-time U.S. Champion, and three-time Olympian in the
sport of luge. She finished 9th in the 1998 Games and 5th at the
1992 Olympic Winter Games in Albertville, France, the highest
finish ever for an American female in luge. In the 1994 Games, due
to an injury, she finished 11th, but was still the top American
female in that sport.
She has resumed her studies as a pre-med student at Dartmouth.
CHAMPIONS IN LIFE
The United States Olympic Committee is committed to the fundamental
goal of the Olympic Movement, which is to contribute to building a
peaceful and better world by educating youth through sport. It is
a mission that is taken very seriously, and one to which
considerable resources are dedicated. The most valuable of these
resources is our Olympic athletes.
"Champions In Life" is a USOC program designed to give young people
the chance to be exposed to the values possessed by Olympic
athletes who can serve as role models. This program is designed to
provide forums for Olympians to deliver messages of hope and

Description
This breakfast will serve as an opportunity to provide the
substantive and logistical details for the "Champions In Life"
school visit program that will commence later that morning. In
this program the athletes will be divided into teams of
approximately five each, be transported to one of twenty schools,
mostly junior high schools, in the Washington Metropolitan area,
and speak to an assembly of students. The message to be delivered
will emphasize the value of education, of staying drug-free, and of
pursuing one's dreams. It is to be a personal perspective, based
upon the individual experience of each athlete.
Each team will be comprised of the following:
Olympic athletes.
One athlete escort who has "advanced," i.e. made all
arrangements for the school being visited.
USOC officer or staff - individual option.
On selected teams, a government official, i.e. Mrs. Clinton,
a Member of the House or Senate.

Michael Jackson will serve as the moderator of the breakfast
program, introducing the other participants and conducting the
question-and-answer period. He will also introduce the video of
the "Champions In Life" program conducted in 1992 on the occasion
of the last Olympic Dinner.
Benita Fitzgerald will present the substantive portion of the
breakfast program. She will deliver remarks intended to motivate
the athletes for their individual visits, and to provide suggested
themes which the athletes might use when they deliver their
presentations to the students. She will be assisted by Michael
Jackson who will suggest a structure for the presentation, and will
distribute cards containing outlines.
Nathaniel Clevenger will discuss the logistics, explaining the
composition of the teams, how and where they form, and where to
find the vehicle assigned to each team. At the conclusion of his
presentation the teams will begin their individual departures for
their respective schools.
USOC Officers and staff are invited to participate in the breakfast
as well as the actual visits if they so desire. However, because
of space limitations in each vehicle it is necessary that the
intent to participate in the visit be registered in advance with
Debbie Dalton of the USOC Staff. Those choosing to participate
will accompany the teams as an observer, and will not be introduced
nor expected to speak.

Athletes move to Blue Room.

Athletes walk out of Blue Room and move into their
positions along the balcony and down onto the
stairways.

"Ruffles and Flourishes"
Announcement
President and Mrs. Clinton emerge from Door to
South Portico while band plays "Hail to the
Chief.

Cammy Myler, who is positioned to the right
(stage right) of the platform, moves to the
podium and presents a team jacket to the
President.
Note: This will be the only presentation.

wearing hers.

Directed by USOC staff, athletes move down
stairway and proceed down driveway and board
busses that will have been repositioned at the
Southeast Gate.
