occasion was ostensibly to honor Marshall, in the circumstances, it was really

embrace has been her stellar performance as chief defender and understanding
spouse amid allegations that her husband had a sexual relationship with

71 percent felt some or much sympathy for Hillary Clinton. In a poll done for
Newsweek magazine, 74 percent said that in two televised interviews in

"In the midst of an extraordinary feeding frenzy in the media, when
allegations were being thrown around fast and furious, Mrs. Clinton's role was
invaluable," Lewis said. "No one else could have done it."
Indeed, it would be a mistake to underestimate the pivotal
on his staff and to obstruct justice.
Among those whom Starr called in was Sidney Blumenthal, a White House aide
close to Hillary Clinton and, according to last week's conservative Weekly
Standard magazine, "Hillary's Brain" behind her allegations of a conspiracy of

written, scratching for dirt, intimidating witnesses, doing everything
possible to make some accusation against my husband, Hillary Clinton lamented
during her "Today" show interview Jan. 27.
And as a woman whose marriage and political ambitions have been threatened
repeatedly by
confessions nearly sank Clinton's presidential campaign in 1992, and
Paula Jones's lawsuit eventually exposed the Lewinsky story - Hillary Clinton
knew that she alone had the moral authority, credibility, and sincerity to tell
the country and a very shaken White House staff that what didn't trouble her
Reich, who is now a professor of social and economic policy at Brandeis
University.
While most Americans have found Hillary Clinton an eloquent and admirable
defender of the president, many still don't buy the story. In the Newsweek poll,
33 percent
only saying she did to protect him.
Barbara Ehrenreich, a feminist writer and social critic, says there is
something "unseemly" in how Hillary Clinton repeatedly rescues her husband from
reports of extramarital affairs and then leads the damage-control operation. "If
it helps her in the polls, that's all she cares about, says Ehrenreich, who say
she lost respect for Hillary Clinton "a long time ago."
"If we were talking about alcohol, we'd use the term 'enabler' for Hillary,"
Ehrenreich says.
"

Still, for as many who see Hillary Clinton as a caring mother and devoted
wife, there are others who see in her only cold calculation: The power to rescue
her husband
enormous leverage in the marriage and an unassailable authority in their

"Going to the mat for her husband is how Mrs. Clinton proves her value in
their relationship," Danielle Crittenden says. "It's interesting that what
people didn't like about her - that she was an unelected
incredible political strength as an underdog in the face of humiliation."
In the White House, the view is that it's about time Hillary Clinton got some
credit for her focus on family issues, both personal and national. After all, it
has taken
Age meditations and imaginary conversations with Eleanor Roosevelt.
The real problem, says Lewis, is that, until now, many people have seen

become governor.
"Is it an uphill battle? Of course it is, " Mrs. Clinton told about 500
supporters at a fund-raiser in Dallas, where she began a three-city tour. "He
Mrs. Clinton's swing through Dallas, Fort Worth and Austin marked her first
major political appearance since the uproar over allegations that President
Clinton had a sexual relationship with a White House intern and asked her to lie
about it.
Mrs. Clinton has blamed the scandal on a "vast right-wing conspiracy" but
made no reference to it Thursday, focusing

heralding the Child Care Center as a model of what day care should be, and no
one wanted a bunch of cranky kids on hand.
By the time Mrs. Clinton toured the facility near Fair Park, the refreshed
children serenaded her, gave her flowers and showed her their classroom.
What she was there to see is called relationship-
proposed spending $ 21.7 billion over the next five years to expand
child-care options and create tougher standards. Mrs. Clinton took the
opportunity to highlight the proposals as well as the center.
"We know what works, but unfortunately we don't always see that as we travel
the country," Mrs. Clinton said after touring the center.
