Dear Friends:
I am pleased to have this opportunity to
join my voice with yours in congratulating the
four individuals you honor today for their
contribution in the struggle against AIDS; Ms.
Irene Diamond, Dr. Emilio Emini, Ms. Brenda
Freiberg and Ms. Lisa Tiger. Everyone living
with HIV or AIDS is somebody's child, and I
appreciate what these "Extraordinary Voices" have
done for all of America's children.
We are making progress in the fight against
AIDS. We have increased funding for AIDS
research, prevention and care by over 50% since
President Clinton took office. Transmission of
HIV from mother to child declined significantly
between 1992 and 1995. Protease inhibitors have
been used to treat infection with dramatic
success, but we have not finished our work.
Mothers' Voices has powerfully united the
voices of mothers across the country to fight for
more effective HIV prevention, better treatments
for people living with HIV, and the development
of a vaccine and a cure. I thank you for your
boundless energy and continuing commitment to
reaching the goal that we all share -- a world
without AIDS.
