I am\ndeeply honored to receive it and very sorry I could not join you\nin person.\nLike many of you, and like millions of other Americans, my\nfamily has been touched by breast cancer and the tragedy it can\nbring. My mother-in-law, Virginia Kelly, struggled against the\ndisease for several years. She never lost her courage or her\nspirit. And I am proud to join you in paying tribute to the\n46,000 women in our country each year who, like my mother-in-law,\nare forced to confront breast cancer.\nBecause breast cancer affects so many families across our\ncountry, the Clinton Administration has made it a priority to\nshare the message of early detection with all women, especially\nthe tens of thousands of women who are eligible for Medicare,\nencouraging them to use their Medicare benefit to get a\nmammogram. The President has proclaimed October 19th National\nMammography Day--a day which annually reminds every woman to make\nan appointment for the mammogram which could save her life.\nNational Breast Cancer Awareness Month offers us an\nopportunity to reach out to all women and educate them about the\nimportance of early detection. Community outreach services and\nworksite screenings are some of the things we can do as part of\nthis education campaign. It is only when we get the word out to\nour mothers, grandmothers, sisters, daughters, friends, neighbors\nand co-workers that we can begin to free ourselves from the grip\nof this deadly disease.\nI would like to extend my congratulations to the winners of\ntonight's Profiles in Progress Awards. And I would also like to\nthank the seventeen members of the Board of Sponsors, especially\nZeneca for being the corporate leader in worksite screenings and\nthe founder of National Breast Cancer Awareness Month ten years\nago.\nThank you for doing your part in the fight against breast\ncancer. Your efforts will literally help save lives.\n###"
