FOIA Number: 2006-1733-F FOIA MARKER This is not a textual record. This is used as an administrative marker by the William J. Clinton Presidential Library Staff. As Honorary Chair of this event, it gives me great pleasure to join you for this evening of celebration in support of the Children's Hearing Institute. I only with I could be there in person, as you honor my friend and a true humanitarian, Dennis Basso. I often speak about how no task facing American is more crucial -- or more challenging -- than the task of preparing our children for the future. But what does that mean? It means we must help them overcome the barriers that keep them from reaching their fullest potential -- and give them the tools and opportunities they need to compete successfully in today's global economy. That is why the work of The Children's Hearing Institute is so important. By promoting the cochlear [Coke-lear] implants, you are giving deaf children the ability to hear the sounds that so many of us take for granted -- listening to music, hearing the laughter of friends, using the telephone. And by educating, training, and counseling teachers and school officials, you are making sure that they have the support they deserve -- and the confidence they need -- to reach their fullest potential. Tonight, we honor a man who has worked tirelessly to assure more of our young people are given this extraordinary gift of hearing -- Dennis Basso -- our Jule [Julie] Styne [Stine] Humanitarian Awardee. In addition to being one of the nation's leading designers, Dennis is always finding new ways to serve and help others. We salute him tonight for his work on behalf of the Children's Hearing Institute. This evening is special for another reason. The President and I join everyone here in wishing Dennis a very happy birthday. I want to thank all of you for what you are doing to lift up the lives and the spirits of our children. I hope you all have a wonderful evening.
