It was a great pleasure to finally meet you when I visited the Kennedy School in November to
speak to your program. I was delighted to find that the two of us have so many common interests
and concerns. I hope we will be able to renew our conversation soon, whether it be in Boston, Tokyo
or someplace in between.
I am writing to you now to seek your help with something quite important to me and to Japanese
women in general On April 8-9, 1999, here in Tokyo, an International Businesswomen's Forum
will be hosted by the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce and Industry's Businesswomen's Club. This
will be the largest women's conference held in Japan in many years and will provide Japan's top
businesswomen an opportunity to coordinate their interests and network with one other, as well as
with women from around the Asia-Pacific. From the United States, for example, Diahann Lassus,
the president of the National Association of Women Business Owners, among others, will speak.
For your reference, I am enclosing with this letter a pamphlet that describes the forum in much
greater detail.
It is the event's organizer's and my fervent hope that the First Lady, Mrs. Hillary Rodham Clinton,
will be able to address the forum. I have held discussions regarding her appearance with officials at
the American Embassy here in Tokyo. Ambassador Tom Foley and other top officials have
expressed their approval and passed on the request to Washington Last autumn, we agreed,
however, that a short videotaped address or even a letter would probably be the most realistic.

GREETINGS
The Tokyo Chamber of Commerce and Industry Businesswomen's Club which was established
as the first such businesswomen's club in Japan will celebrate its 50th anniversary in 1999.
Due to the tremendous efforts of other pioneer businesswomen,
similar businesswomen's clubs throughout Japan have been organized and now
number approximately 370 with a total membership nearing 30,000.
To celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce and Industry Businesswomen's Club
and to look ahead to new activities for the 21st century, we have decided to engage in a commemorative
convention. The world economy is now in the midst of a period of considerable change.
That the evaluation for working women has risen year by year, thanks to the activities of women entrepreneurs,
stands out as one indication of such change. Given these conditions,
we believe that it is imperative for businesswomen to continue to test themselves,
to display the talents unique to women, and to serve as one group helping to develop the economy.
As both our commemorative convention and an enterprise to assist women in accomplishing these tasks,
we plan to hold the International Businesswomen's Forum 1999. We anticipate that approximately
200 businesswomen from around the world will attend in addition to the domestic participants,
a number which will enable us to create a strong global network of businesswomen.
We have been enthusiastically working to prepare for the convention,
in the spirit of making history and celebrating our fifty-year history.
We sincerely hope that you will be able to attend.

SUMMARY OF THE CONVENTION
Purpose
In recent years, the activities of women entrepreneurs around the world have
been recognized. Those who will affect the world economy in the future will
be businesswomen. who have such qualities and abilities as sensibility,
foresight, tolerance, and flexibility in dealing with a range of situations. The
unification of women with these talents into a worldwide network will result
not only in the flowering of new businesses and industries which will meet
contemporary needs, but also in the creation of new social economy for the
21st century, a time when corporations will play a significant role in making
contributions to society.
With this knowledge in hand, striving toward a global network of business-
women for the 21st century, the Tokyo Chamber of Commerce and Industry
Businesswomen's Club will hold in April 1999, a commemorative convention
including a ceremony to celebrate its 50th anniversary and the International
Businesswomen's Forum 1999 with the main theme "A Women's Network
Creating the Social Economy of the 21st Century." We sincerely hope that
this convention will serve as an impetus for creating social economy that will
be more powerful in the next century.

Tour highlights;include a
visit to the NHK broadcasting center, a broadcast theme park. You can learn about broadcast history, watch a live broadcast, and
see a realistic set for a well-known samurai drama. One of the main attractions of the park is a 3-D Hi-Vision theater, which you
can enjoy without 3-D glasses. This is the first system of its kind in the world, now being developed by NHK. The tour also
includes a visit to the Asakusa district, where the atmosphere of old Japan is still to be savored. The Kaminarimon Gate, famous
for its gigantic hanging paper lantern, stands at the entrance to the Asakusa Kannon Temple. Beyond the gate, you will find a
passageway called "Nakamise", where a host of quaint shops offer fascinating traditional souvenirs.

PASSPORT and (entry) VISA - Every foreign visitor entering Japan must have a valid passport. Visitors from countries whose citizens
require a visa should apply to a Japanese Consular Office or Diplomatic
Mission in their own country. For details, please contact a travel agent or your nearest Japanese Consular Office.
CUSTOMS - A customs duty will not be levied on personal effects as long as their contents and quantities are deemed reasonable by
a customs officer. In addition, the following items can be brought in duty free:

INSURANCE - - The organizer cannot accept responsibility for possible accidents. Delegates are encouraged to obtain travel insurance

TIME - Japan time is 9 hours ahead of Greenwich Mean Time (ex. 22:00 in Tokyo is 14:00 in Zurich, 13:00 in London and 08:00 in New York).

RRENCY and EXCHANGE - Most stores and restaurants accept only Japanese cash (¥ yen). Some will accept credit cards and/or
foreign currency as well. Ask before you make any purchases. Yen can be bought at banks and at authorized foreign exchange counters.
Your passport is required.
TRAVELLER'S CHEQUES and CREDIT CARDS - Traveler's cheques are not popular in Japan but might be accepted by leading
businesses. Widely accepted credit cards are: American Express, Diners Club, MasterCard and VISA.
TIPPING - In Japan, tipping is not customary. even at hotels and restaurants.
ELECTRICAL APPLIANCES
Japan operates on 100-110 volts for electrical appliances. The frequency is 50 Hz in eastern Japan, including Tokyo, and 60 Hz in western
Japan, including, Kyoto.
SHOPPING - Most department stores are open daily from 10:00 to 19:00, including Sundays and national holidays. They are closed only one
day a week, either Monday, Wednesday or Thursday (please check before you go). Retail shops are generally open all week from 10:00 to 20:00.
Business Opportunity
Tables (60 cm X 90 cm per person) and chairs will be available in front of
the meeting hall for the display of sample goods. Individuals who are
interested in displaying something should obtain an ATA Carnet for the
temporary admission of goods beforehand and should bring their goods
with them on the days of the convention. We ask that attendees refrain

I am writing on behalf of Ms. Kiyoko Koizumi, the Chairperson of the
Tokyo Chamber of Commerce's Businesswomen's Club. The businesswomen's
club is organizing a very important event for women in Japan next year: the
International Businesswomen's Forum 1999.
At the this forum, which will be attended from across Asia and the
Pacific, important issues and challenges facing businesswomen will be
discussed. We would be deeply honored if the American First Lady, Hilary
Clinton, would agree to participate in this important event. She is not only a
very successful businesswoman in her own right, but now, as First Lady, she
serves as a role model to women across the globe. The First Lady's presence,
or video participation, at this event would greatly boost the spirit and hope
for women everywhere.
The Forum will draw leading businesswomen from Japan and abroad,
but also powerful public and private sector leaders who a particularly conc
erned with the role of women in business and society. Leaders of some of the
world's most progressive companies, plus top political Japanese political
leaders will attend.
The clearest sign of the importance of this gathering is the
attendance of Her Royal Highness Princess Masako. The Imperial Family
almost never makes public appearances at private sector gatherings. That
Princess Masako will attend this conference indicates the significance of both
the Businesswomen's Club and the forum's agenda.
This Forum is an important commemorative event, marking 50 years
of leadership in women's issues in Japan. The Businesswomen's Club has
provided Japanese women with a broad network of their own for organizing

As the founder and co-director of a small non-profit, it was fascinating for me to hear
about progress in the for-profit sector. I was particularly excited to see that the

unexpected pleasure of sitting next to twelve-year-old Jason Crowe from Indiana. We
exchanged stories and quickly became friends. We have been emailing each other since

Decision Making. Over the past five years, Youth on Board has trained thousands of

disappointed that Mrs. Clinton is unable to visit Toledo and speak to our Auxiliary
next December, but I understand that she has a very full schedule. Please forgive
me for being tenacious, but hopefully Mrs. Clinton will be able to consider the
following request instead.
Please ask her if it would be possible to make a ten minute video presentation
about her favorite Christmas traditions and about Christmases in the White House
that we might show and view the day of our meeting.
I realize that this has nothing to do with the request, but please tell her that I
thought of this because wherever I go, people approach me and ask, "Has anyone
ever told you that you look like Hillary Clinton?" Or they say, You may think that
I'm crazy, but I see a resemblance in your face to Hillary Clinton." And one day this
occurred, and it made me think of the initial request.
