Micro-enterprises serve as a link between underprivileged women and
men around the world. In gatherings such as these, participants from around
the world can congregate not only to share ideas, but also to create a network
of support and future cooperation. In Jordan, we hope to further our links
and join with many others over the years to share success stories and learn
from our assorted experiences.
I was looking through the conference program earlier today and was
truly impressed by the diverse backgrounds of the participants and the
organizations you all represent. You undoubtedly bring first-hand experience
to this gathering, and there is a transferable value of the lessons you have
learned and the work you have done. Your dedication will inspire others to
persevere in their efforts, and I urge you to continue sharing your ideas and
expertise at all levels.
In this spirit of global exchange and hopefully what will be another
forum for shared experiences and lessons, First Lady Hillary Rodham Clinton
and myself plan to hold a conference in Jordan on micro-enterprises at the
end of this month. I look forward to joining the First Lady in her crusade to
generate investment capital for new businesses and the underprivileged in
inner cities and rural areas. She is truly passionate about micro-financing and
has worked relentlessly to advance its usage as a tool for socio-economic
development. I look forward to welcoming her to Jordan soon as we join our
efforts in this regard.
